When unveiling World of Warcraft: Forever, Blizzard openly acknowledged that the game draws heavily from lessons learned across WoW Classic and the experimental Season of Discovery (SoD). However, Forever is far from a direct port. Instead, it represents a deliberate refinement: adopting proven systems that enhance long-term world vitality—exploration quests, trade logistics, universal book collecting, and class flavor—while leaving engraved runes and the season’s more experimental class roles behind.

In the current beta, the legacy of Season of Discovery is impossible to miss. Here is a definitive breakdown of the systems that carried over, how mechanics evolved, and what Blizzard intentionally left out.

Core Systems Confirmed in the Beta

The Cozy Sleeping Bag: Essential Outdoor Leveling Gear

Resting outdoors pays tangible dividends in Forever: campfires grant a buff, and the Cozy Sleeping Bag stacks a valuable experience bonus on top.

The beloved sleeping bag quest chain returns intact. True to its classic exploration roots, it features no standard quest exclamation marks: starting at level 14, players begin from a charred campsite in Westfall or The Barrens, following cryptic scrap notes across multiple zones up to a secluded perch on Thoradin’s Wall.

The resulting Cozy Sleeping Bag can be unrolled anywhere outdoors. Resting on it grants up to 3% bonus experience from every source for two full hours. It is always on while you quest, so it quietly adds up across a full leveling run, making it a must-have for every character at launch.

Follow the step-by-step route in our Cozy Sleeping Bag walkthrough.

Trade Organizations and Waylaid Crates: An Economic Keystone

The two faction-specific logistics consortiums—the Azeroth Commerce Authority (Alliance) and Durotar Supply and Logistics (Horde)—are back in business. As in Season of Discovery, Waylaid Crates drop across the world: read the label, fill the crate with the goods it asks for, and deliver it.

Forever evolves this system significantly: deliveries now pay out Merchant’s Favor, a currency you spend with the two organizations on recipes and other rewards, tightly weaving open-world gathering and crafting into the broader economy. A Legacy System perk can also sometimes grant extra Merchant’s Favor.

  • Leveling Priority: Crates drop starting at level 10 and request herbs, ore, cloth, and crafted trade goods.
  • Check Before You Sell: A stack of materials can be worth more in a crate than on the Auction House. View full requirements and vendor inventories in our Merchant’s Favor guide.

Library Books: From Mage Privilege to a Universal World Hunt

Book collecting began as a Mage activity in Season of Discovery; Forever expands it into a universal outdoor collection for all classes.

In Season of Discovery, hunting rare books scattered across Azeroth was strictly a Mage affair. Forever opens this rewarding worldwide scavenger hunt to all nine classes.

Tomes gathered in the wild can be donated to Garion Wendell in the Stormwind Wizard’s Sanctum or Owen Thadd in the Undercity Magic Quarter. The beta client currently contains 40 distinct books. Donating 10 different books completes Friend of the Library, and Greater Friend of the Library follows as you keep donating. The milestone rewards suit every class.

Discover all 40 tome locations and milestones in our Library Books guide.

Mage Comprehension: Expanding Class-Specific Depth

On top of the shared library system, Mages receive an exclusive layer of class identity. Every donated book pays out a Comprehension Charm that only Mages can use, and Mages learn a brand-new skill: Comprehension, capped at 300.

Mages can cast Study inside capital libraries once per hour to transform a Light Feather into a Bundle of Scrolls, using Comprehend Scroll to decipher mysterious esoteric texts found in the wild. Rather than a straight port of SoD questing, this is an authentic RPG subsystem expanding on the season’s scroll-hunting premise. Details are covered in our Mage Comprehension guide.

Dungeon Currency: Tarnished Undermine Reals

The dungeon currency from Season of Discovery is officially coming to Forever. Blizzard confirmed the inclusion during the September 17 live Q&A, and beta builds already list Tarnished Undermine Real with a holding cap of 165.

How you earn and spend it in Forever has not been detailed yet. Track updates on our Currencies page.

Selected Class Quests: Restoring the Classic Epic Journey

Class-specific narrative quests were among Season of Discovery’s most celebrated features. Senior Game Designer Josh Greenfield said in a September interview that some Season of Discovery class quests made it into Forever, some were expanded, and brand-new ones were added. He added that the team wants to make more, and that anything not ready for launch can come later.

Blizzard has kept the exact quest list secret, leaving players to organically discover these class flavor moments while leveling.

Mechanical Evolution: From Slot-In Runes to Native Talents

Several abilities that players first encountered through runes—including Wild Growth for Druids, Lone Wolf for Hunters, Hot Streak for Mages, and Lava Burst and Riptide for Shamans—are now integral parts of Forever’s class kit.

Crucially, the underlying framework has completely transformed: Where Season of Discovery delivered these abilities as runes engraved on gear, Forever builds them into each class’s talent trees, and the rune system itself is not part of the game. The September 24 development notes even fixed an issue that made a Season of Discovery rune ability visible. Players can inspect where these iconic abilities sit in our updated talent calculator.

Not at Launch: Preserving Classic Foundations

Some of the season’s boldest experiments are staying out for now:

  • Clear Class Roles: Role conversions such as Shaman tanks, Warlock tanks, and Mage healers are not part of Forever. The developers said features like these do not fit the simplicity and class identity they want for Forever, and that they are starting closer to the original game than to Season of Discovery. Every class still gains new tools, while each keeps a recognizable role.
  • Faction Balance Intervention: On the other hand, Forever directly borrows SoD’s battle-tested PvP population control. On the PvP ruleset, when faction populations drift too far apart, new character creation for one faction can be temporarily paused to keep both sides healthy.

What Players Hope Comes Next

While unconfirmed by Blizzard, several standout SoD features top the community’s wish list for future content phases:

  • Extended Class Narratives: Such as the Paladin journey pursuing the legendary blade Truthbearer.
  • World Mysteries: Large-scale puzzle events like the Dark Riders hunt and the Desolace robbery.
  • Bespoke Crafting Sagas: The atmospheric Void-Touched crafting quest chains.
  • Season of Discovery Dungeons: New instances like Demon Fall Canyon and Karazhan Crypts.

The development team has characterized Forever as an “unboxed” world with years of planned evolution. Notably, the “found photos” philosophy driving Forever’s new zones originated as a proposal for Season of Discovery narrative expansions. We will update this guide as additional systems transition over.
