About Onyxia's Lair

Lady Katrana Prestor advises the throne of Stormwind. She is patient, she is well-liked, she is considered one of the steadier voices in the House of Nobles, and she has spent years arranging the kingdom's decisions to suit ends the House would not recognise if they were read aloud. She is also Onyxia, daughter of Deathwing, and the two facts have never once inconvenienced each other.

The brood's method is not conquest. It is counsel. Her brother works the mountain with dragons and armies; Onyxia works a capital with a chair at the table, and the wars the Alliance has not quite been able to explain to itself over the last several years have her fingerprints on them.

Her lair is in the Wyrmbog, in the far south of Dustwallow Marsh, and it is not hidden so much as unvisited. Getting in at all means getting past the Stormwind end of the arrangement first — proving what she is to people who have every political reason not to hear it. The dragon at the bottom of that cave is the easier half of the problem.

First Run

  • The lair is in the Wyrmbog in southern Dustwallow Marsh, south of Theramore.
  • Forty players at maximum level.
  • A single boss in three phases, with fire attacks that punish an unprepared raid. Like every raid in the tier, it is planned to reset weekly.
  • Every raider needs the Drakefire Amulet from a long faction attunement that runs through Blackrock Depths and Blackrock Spire. Start it well ahead.

Veteran Notes

  • One boss, forty players.
  • Three phases. Bring fire resistance and be ready to reposition as the fight shifts.
  • In Forever this is the 40-player raid of the opening tier.

Changes in Forever

  • Onyxia's Lair opens the game's first raid tier. It unlocks on December 9, 2026, alongside Barrow Deeps for ten players and Hyjal Summit for twenty, so the first tier has a raid for every roster size.

The Encounter

Onyxia, of the Black Dragonflight and younger sister of Nefarian, guards her brood deep in Dustwallow Marsh while she works to manipulate Azeroth's mortal races.

Her three-phase encounter punishes an unprepared raid with powerful fire attacks. Build fire resistance before you go in, and be ready to reposition as the fight shifts around you.

  • Every one of the 40 raiders needs the Drakefire Amulet, so start the attunement long before December 9.
  • The attunement runs through Blackrock Depths and both halves of Blackrock Spire, which doubles as gearing for the raid.

Attunement: Earning the Drakefire Amulet

Each faction earns the amulet on its own route, but both end in the same place: General Drakkisath at the top of Upper Blackrock Spire. Here is each route by stage, with where to go, the level you can start at, and which dungeon runs to plan for. Quest names link to their cards further down this page.

Alliance Route

  1. Stage 1 · Level 48+

    Burning Steppes to Stormwind: the True Masters

    Morgan's Vigil, Burning Steppes 85.8, 69.0

    After a dragonkin hunt in the Burning Steppes, the six True Masters quests are mostly travel: letters and conversations between Morgan's Vigil, Magistrate Solomon in Redridge (30.0, 44.5) and Highlord Bolvar in Stormwind Keep (78.2, 18.0). Take a flight path between each stop; no group needed.

  2. Stage 2 · Level 48–50+

    Blackrock Depths: Marshal Windsor's cell

    Marshal Maxwell, Morgan's Vigil 84.7, 69.0Dungeon: Blackrock Depths

    Plan two Depths runs. The first reaches Windsor's cell in Shadowforge City and sends you back to Maxwell. On the second, the note drops from the Depths' enemies; it leads to Golem Lord Argelmach and General Angerforge, then to the jailbreak itself. Agree with your group to clear toward the prison and both bosses.

  3. Stage 3 · Level 50+

    Stormwind: the Great Masquerade

    Squire Rowe, Stormwind City gates

    Back at the city gates, Squire Rowe calls Windsor, and the escort to Stormwind Keep needs friends at your side. Highlord Bolvar then hands you the search for someone who can restore the dragon's eye.

  4. Stage 4 · Level 60 group

    Upper Blackrock Spire: General Drakkisath

    Haleh, Winterspring 54.5, 51.2Dungeon: Upper Blackrock Spire

    The search ends with Drakefire Amulet: General Drakkisath's blood, taken at the end of Upper Blackrock Spire. A full Spire group is the only hard requirement of the last step.

Horde Route

  1. Stage 1 · Level 55+

    Badlands: Kargath and Lower Blackrock Spire

    Blood and Thunder, new in Forever, leads straight into Warlord's Command: Highlord Omokk, War Master Voone, and Overlord Wyrmthalak in Lower Blackrock Spire, plus the Blackrock documents they carry.

  2. Stage 2 · Level 55+

    Orgrimmar: Eitrigg, Thrall, and Rend's head

    Thrall, Orgrimmar 31.7, 37.8Dungeon: Lower Blackrock Spire

    Report to Eitrigg and Thrall, then return to the Spire for Warchief Rend Blackhand's head. That is your second Spire run, so try to line it up with the same group.

  3. Stage 3 · Level 55+

    Desolace and the Plaguelands: Rexxar and Myranda

    Rexxar, on the roads of Desolace

    Thrall points you to Rexxar, who walks the roads of Desolace rather than standing in a town, so follow the road until you meet him. His testament goes to Myranda the Hag in the Western Plaguelands (50.8, 77.8), who needs Black Dragonspawn Eyes before she will help.

  4. Stage 4 · Level 60 group

    Dustwallow Marsh: Emberstrife's tests

    Emberstrife, Wyrmbog, Dustwallow Marsh

    Wearing your Amulet of Draconic Subversion, you are tested by the drake Emberstrife: the skulls of Scryer, Somnus, Chronalis, and Axtroz. These four dragon fights are the longest part of the Horde route, so bring a group. They earn the Dull Drakefire Amulet for Rexxar.

  5. Stage 5 · Level 60 group

    Upper Blackrock Spire: General Drakkisath

    Rexxar, DesolaceDungeon: Upper Blackrock Spire

    Like the Alliance, you finish at General Drakkisath in Upper Blackrock Spire. Take his blood back to Rexxar for the finished Drakefire Amulet.

Before you enter

The amulet only has to be in your bags, not equipped. Check every raider before the first pull: one missing amulet keeps that player outside.
