Ever since World of Warcraft launched in 2004, the Ruins of Lordaeron have been little more than a corridor run on fast-forward. Adventurers sprinting through Tirisfal Glades toward the Undercity elevators barely spared a glance for the broken flagstones and empty courtyards overhead—the grand shell of humanity’s northern jewel was treated merely as an evocative lobby. In World of Warcraft: Forever, Blizzard finally shattered the barricades that had sealed those streets since 2004. The ruined capital has been reincarnated as an open-air, five-player dungeon for levels 15 to 20, welcoming both Horde and Alliance expeditions into one of the richest narrative stages in the game’s history.
What makes this dungeon truly exceptional is how its central tragedy was engineered. Rather than delivering a single clean storyline, Blizzard fractured the heartbreaking aftermath of Lordaeron’s fall into two distinct pieces, placing half into the hands of each faction. Neither side can assemble the full truth on a single run; only when both perspectives align does the weight of what happened here fully register. Below, we break down the urban battlefield, the clashing faction agendas, the poignant fate of the Heartweaver family, detailed tactics for all seven bosses, and a complete directory of its ten high-yield quests.
The Fallen Capital: From Surface Scenery to Urban Battlefield
In classic World of Warcraft, the surface city existed as an atmospheric yet hollow husk: a desolate courtyard, a throne room haunted by the whispers of regicide, and barricaded gates sealing off the streets beyond.
Forever tears down those invisible walls. The dungeon unfurls across four interconnected districts: the aristocratic promenade of King’s Alley, the shattered stalls of Market Street, the mist-drenched overlook of Lordamere Overlook, and the solemn expanses of the Lordaeron Graveyard. The Scourge never truly abandoned these cobblestones. A rising necromancer has blanketed the ruined boulevards in an unholy fog, shielding roaming abominations and shambling dead. Walking the streets of the city that once threw open its gates for Arthas, the toll of forgotten bells and the screams of the purge feel uncomfortably close.
Before venturing into these open streets, review the layout and drops on our Ruins of Lordaeron Dungeon Map and Loot Database to orient your party across the wide sightlines.
Faction Agendas: Reclaiming a Homeland vs. Honoring the Fallen
While both factions plunge into the same fog-choked ruins, their motivations could not be more polarized. Each questline exposes the raw convictions and bitter realities of its people.
Horde: Grim Defense on the Threshold
To the Forsaken, the ruins directly above their subterranean capital represent an indispensable tactical buffer. Yet endless attrition has stretched their frontline thin:
- Morbin Lightbane (Royal Quarter, Undercity): A Forsaken paladin fighting in memory of his fallen commander, Captain Garek Bandarion. He tasks adventurers with collecting 25 Intact Limbs to rebuild their battered ranks—explaining bluntly that “decaying flesh cannot be reknit without replacements,” a sobering reminder of what it takes for the undead to endure.
- Deathguard Kristof (Camp Southeast of Brill): Has reports from the Lordamere Overlook: an unholy fog has swallowed the streets and the graveyard, hiding the Scourge, and it comes from the necromancer Rath’mael. While Kristof harbors no illusions about permanently eradicating the Scourge—admitting that someone else will eventually replace Rath’mael—he insists on striking now to thin enemy ranks and buy precious time for the forward defense.
- Theodore Griffs (The Apothecarium, Undercity): The Royal Apothecary Society cares only for deadly reagents. Griffs covets a sample from Witherfang, a monstrous arachnid whose venom can dissolve even dead tissue. Bring back the strain and he is openly annoyed that you killed the creature, grudgingly settles for the ichor, and reminds you in no uncertain terms never to cross the Society.
Alliance: Bringing Dignity to the Slain
When Lordaeron fell to the Scourge, many of its people fled south to Stormwind, and few are left to claim what the dead left behind. The Alliance side of the dungeon starts with what you find in the ruins:
- Bloodied Insignias and the Crest of Lordaeron: The old Alliance insignias scattered through the streets belonged to Lordaeron’s soldiers. Gather ten and carry them to General Marcus Jonathan in Stormwind, who will return them to the soldiers’ next of kin. A weathered Crest of Lordaeron goes to Lady Dena Kennedy.
- Captain Truman’s Bitter Twist: Stationed just inside the entrance, Truman presents one of the sharpest narrative subversions in the dungeon. Still holding his post long after his master charged into battle, he sends adventurers to seek out his master—the Grand Marshal—whom he reveres as the “tallest, most statuesque hero” the world has seen. But when you return bearing the severed head of the lumbering abomination known as The Baron, the horrifying truth crashes down: the monstrosity was his beloved lord. Rather than offering thanks, Truman snaps in vicious fury, condemning the party as a “lesser breed” and declaring that the true sons of Lordaeron will one day reclaim their home and purge it of beasts like you. The Alliance’s only contact in the ruins is a fanatical, hate-fueled royalist.
The Heartweaver Tragedy: One Family Shattered Across Both Factions
In the sweeping cataclysm of the Scourge invasion, the Heartweavers were neither high nobility nor mighty paladins—they were merely one ordinary family swallowed by the chaos. What makes their story remarkable is how Blizzard chose to tell it, fracturing this modest human footnote across enemy lines so neither faction can grasp the full picture alone.
The Horde Half: A Desperate Search. At the Sepulcher in Silverpine Forest, the Forsaken Tabitha Heartweaver offers the quest A Frightened Request. During Arthas’s purge of the capital, her young son vanished into the chaos, his body never recovered. Her husband, Edward, has carried that grief and guilt ever since, sneaking back into the ruins’ graveyard week after week to search the overgrown tombs. Now, he has been missing for days. When Horde adventurers fight through to the necromancer Rath’mael’s unholy circle, the search reaches its grim conclusion: Edward’s body lies in the graveyard beside the necromancer’s violet circle. He died still searching for his lost child.
The Alliance Half: A Father’s Last Words. Venturing through the Lordaeron Graveyard, Alliance adventurers uncover a torn, blood-stained parchment: Last Scrawlings of Edward Heartweaver, initiating Remember That I Love You. These are the last words Edward wrote before he died in the ruins. Delivering the parchment to Orphan Matron Nightingale in Stormwind unlocks the missing puzzle piece: little Jeremy Heartweaver did not perish in the siege. He was brought to the orphanage after the attack on Lordaeron, presumed to have lost both parents, and recently adopted by Avette Fellwood in Duskwood.
When you carry the letter into the shadows of Duskwood and hand it to Avette, she makes an unexpected choice: she refuses to show it to the boy. Jeremy has not spoken a single word since the horror of the purge, and Avette will not force him to relive that trauma before his heart is ready. She promises to preserve his father’s final message until he is grown.
The Weight of the Full Truth. Step back to view both storylines together, and the tragedy becomes devastating: a father dies in the cold northern mud, still tormented by guilt, never knowing his boy survived; a surviving son lives in silent trauma in a haunted southern forest, believing he is alone in the world; and a grieving mother waits eternally as Forsaken in Silverpine, with no one across the faction lines able to tell her that her child is alive.
When you return to Tabitha in Silverpine, she simply thanks you for undertaking an unfair request, voicing a fragile wish that your paths might cross again “without such sorrow.” Running both factions transforms this dungeon from a routine loot run into an unforgettable narrative experience.
Boss Encounters: Seven Battles in the Mist
The Ruins of Lordaeron features seven boss encounters: five on the main path, one hidden boss you summon, and one rare spawn. Here they are in the order a full run meets them:
| Boss | Where and what to know |
|---|---|
| Witherfang | Venomous spider. Nests with a swarm of spiders on the right side of the map, halfway up. Kill it for the Highly Toxic Strain (Horde quest: The New Plague). |
| The Baron | Off-tank swap. A colossal stitched abomination near the bottom of the map, just right of center. He stuns his current target and turns on the next player on the threat list, so keep an off-tank (warrior, feral druid, or a taunting pet) ready, and keep melee alert. Listed as The Butcher in the encounter list; his head starts or completes quests for both factions. |
| The Abandoned | Wave gauntlet. In a small room set back on the left side of the map. Walk up to the knight statue and it flares violet; hold through three to four waves before The Abandoned leaps out. Rest to full before you trigger it. |
| Bjork | Knockback and shield. Patrols the road along the upper left edge. He knocks the tank back, so fight him with the tank’s back to a wall, away from other packs. When he raises his Anti-Magic Shield, casters should hold their spells until it fades. |
| Rath’mael | Main-path finale. The necromancer behind the unholy fog stands on a colossal violet circle under the domed building in the center of the map. Edward Heartweaver’s body lies in the graveyard beside him. Target of The Wrath of Rath’mael. |
| Viktor the Vile | Hidden encounter. A ghoul waiting in the ruined house with a chimney in the lower-left corner. Click the Warm Kindling under the chimney, then hold through four to five waves until he appears. |
| Lordaeron Captain | Rare spawn. He will not be there on every run, so take him down when you see him. |
Urban Tactical Route: Clearing the Four U-Shaped Districts
Rather than navigating narrow underground hallways, the entire dungeon takes place across an expansive urban plaza. The instance portal stands in the surface courtyard of the ruins directly above the Undercity in Tirisfal Glades. Horde players can walk straight in; Alliance adventurers must hike through Silverpine Forest or cross the borders of the Western Plaguelands.
The city is structured as a wide U-shaped loop partitioned into King’s Alley, Market Street, Lordamere Overlook, and the Lordaeron Graveyard. Broad boulevards mean generous sightlines, but they also mean extended aggro radii. To prevent accidental wipes from roving patrols, clear through the districts using this disciplined clockwise route:
- Right Wing Breach (Witherfang): Head straight in and fight through the spiders to the right side of the plaza, halfway up. Keep going right, dropping down into the nest crawling with spiders, to find Witherfang.
- Southern Plaza Push (The Baron): Come back and continue straight to the bottom of the map, just right of center. Establish your fighting formation in the open plaza, coordinate the tank-swap mechanics to survive the stun, and collect the Baron’s head for your faction quest.
- Left Wing Gauntlet (The Abandoned): Follow the U-loop westward. Cut into the recessed chamber on the mid-left side, ensure all healers and casters drink to full mana, and endure the waves the statue calls before taking down The Abandoned.
- Perimeter Intercept (Bjork): Continue north along the outer western avenue. Time your pull to catch Bjork away from ambient mobs, tanking him with your back securely braced against a wall to counteract his knockback.
- Relic Recovery (Crest of Lordaeron): Search the colonnades and stairwells around the upper-left pavilions for a weathered shield glinting with pale gold. It does not always spawn in the same spot, so check behind the walls of the small pavilion and the stairwell corner of the house beside it. Clicking it yields the Crest of Lordaeron.
- Central Decapitation (Rath’mael): Regroup and push into the domed building at the center of the map. Slay the necromancer Rath’mael on his summoning circle, then step into the graveyard beside it, where Edward Heartweaver’s body lies. Horde players complete A Frightened Request here, while Alliance players find his last letter in the graveyard debris.
- Optional Clean-Up (Viktor the Vile): If your party has sufficient health and mana reserves, head down to the ruined cottage in the southwestern corner. Clear the perimeter, click the kindling, survive the ghoul assault, and defeat the hidden boss.
Keep three golden rules in mind while clearing:
- Pull with discipline: The open streets allow wide line-of-sight pulls. Have a ranged party member pull mobs back to your group rather than letting the tank charge recklessly into blind intersections.
- Top off before gauntlet events: Both the knight statue and the warm kindling lock your party into continuous combat waves without rest breaks. Never trigger them until everyone is at full resources.
- Maintain a backup taunt: The Baron’s stun hands him straight to the next player on his threat list, and without a second taunt that is usually a healer.
Quest Compendium: Ten High-Yield Objectives Before You Zone In
Ruins of Lordaeron features ten distinct dungeon quests: six for the Horde and four for the Alliance. Although the quests are level 21 to 22 (appearing red in the quest logs of lower-level groups), a party at level 16 or above can pick them all up and clear the dungeon. The experience rewards are massive—Alliance quests grant up to 9,750 XP each, making this an essential leveling stop.

Your Ruins of Lordaeron Action Plan
- Pick up all outdoor faction quests before heading in. Horde players should complete the circuit through The Sepulcher, The Apothecarium, the Royal Quarter, and the Brill outpost before entering. Tabitha’s search reaches its poignant resolution at the central graveyard. See our Undercity Zone Guide.
- Bring an off-tank and dependable crowd control. The Baron’s sudden threat swap and the long wave fights before The Abandoned and Viktor reward an off-tanking warrior, druid, or taunting pet, plus a sheep or a sap. Review the Ruins of Lordaeron Dungeon Overview to plan loot distribution ahead of time.
- Inspect the ground for quest relics. Edward’s dying letter, discarded insignias, and the gilded crest shield all unlock massive experience payouts—sweep every courtyard clean after clearing each pack.
- Follow the letter all the way to Duskwood. Alliance players should never stop at Stormwind: carry Edward’s final message south into Duskwood to witness how this human drama concludes.
- Level an alt to experience the other half. Tabitha’s grief and Avette’s silent compassion only make sense when experienced together. Consult our directory of All Dungeons by Level to map out your full leveling route.
