The Three Hard Limits
Most of the specification list is advisory. Three items are not, and each one stops the game from running if you miss it.
- A solid state drive with 128 GB free. A mechanical hard drive is not supported, on either platform.
- 8 GB of memory. 16 GB is the recommended figure, and the difference shows in cities and raids.
- A GPU new enough to clear the architecture cutoff. This one retires cards that ran Classic perfectly well, so check it before anything else.
The GPU Architecture Cutoff
Forever requires a graphics card built on one of these microarchitectures or newer. What matters is the architecture, not how expensive the card was.
| Vendor | Minimum architecture | Introduced | Example cards |
|---|---|---|---|
| AMD | Graphics Core Next 1 | 2012 | Radeon HD 7850 and newer |
| NVIDIA | Maxwell | 2014 | GeForce GTX 750, 750 Ti, and the GTX 9xx series |
| Intel | Skylake | 2015 | HD Graphics 530 and newer |
The cards below clear Classic but not Forever. Note how close some of them sit to supported models from the same year: a GTX 780 is out while a GTX 750 Ti is in, because the 750 Ti is Maxwell and the 780 is not.
| Not supported | Why |
|---|---|
| AMD Radeon HD 6950 | Pre-GCN architecture (2010) |
| NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760, 770, 780 | Kepler, one generation below Maxwell |
| NVIDIA GeForce GTX 8xxM | Kepler-based laptop parts |
| Intel HD Graphics 6000 | Broadwell, one generation below Skylake |
The reason for the line is a single feature: RGBA16F UAV support in compute shaders, which GPUs gained around 2012 and which the new lighting, fog, and water rendering depends on.
To check your card on Windows: open Settings, then System, then Display, then Advanced display. Device Manager, under Display adapters, shows the same thing.
Clearing the cutoff is not the same as meeting the minimum specification. These architectures are the floor for running the game at all; the table below is what Blizzard lists as playable.
Windows Requirements
| Minimum | Recommended | |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit (May 2019 Update or newer) | Windows 11 |
| Processor | 4 cores at 3.0 GHz: Intel Core Haswell or AMD Ryzen Zen | 8 performance cores at 5.2 GHz boost: Intel Core Ultra (Series 2) or AMD Ryzen Zen 5 |
| Graphics | DirectX 12 capable 4 GB GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 10 series, AMD RDNA 1, or Intel Iris Xe2-LPG | DirectX 12 capable 8 GB GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 series, AMD RDNA 3, or Intel Arc B-Series |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM |
| Storage | SSD with 128 GB available | SSD with 128 GB available |
| Display | 1280 × 720 minimum | 1280 × 720 minimum |
Mac Requirements
| Minimum | Recommended | |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | macOS 12 | macOS 15 |
| Processor | Apple M2 or 9th generation Intel Core (Coffee Lake) | Apple M4 |
| Graphics | Metal capable 4 GB GPU: Apple M2 with 8 GB | Apple M4 with 16 GB |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM |
| Storage | SSD with 128 GB available | SSD with 128 GB available |
Every platform also needs a broadband connection, a Battle.net account, and the Battle.net desktop app.
Settings That Matter
Forever ships two levers that change performance more than any individual slider.
- Visual preset. Modern and Classic presets change the whole look of the world, so the cheaper option is a real choice rather than a downgrade.
- HD or SD character models. Crowded cities and raids are where this shows up first.
- Gamepad support. Forever supports controllers officially, alongside keyboard and mouse.
Details on both presets and controller support are in the visuals and controls guide.
The surest test is your own machine. The beta runs through October 21, 2026, two weeks before launch.
Common Questions
What are the WoW Forever minimum requirements?
On Windows: Windows 10 64-bit, a 4-core 3.0 GHz processor, a DirectX 12 capable 4 GB GPU, 8 GB of RAM, and an SSD with 128 GB free. On macOS: macOS 12, an Apple M2 or 9th generation Intel Core, and the same memory and storage.
Will my older graphics card still work?
It depends on the architecture, not the model year. Your GPU must be based on AMD Graphics Core Next 1 (2012), NVIDIA Maxwell (2014), or Intel Skylake (2015) or newer. Anything below that line cannot run Forever and needs to be replaced.
Why is there a GPU architecture cutoff?
The new visual look relies on RGBA16F UAV support in compute shaders, a feature GPUs gained around 2012. Cards without it cannot render the updated visuals.
How do I check which GPU I have?
On Windows, open Settings, then System, then Display, then Advanced display to see the make and model. You can also open Device Manager and expand Display adapters.
Do I really need an SSD?
Yes. The minimum specification calls for a solid state drive with 128 GB of free space. A mechanical hard drive is not supported.
Can I test performance before launch?
Yes. The beta runs through October 21, 2026 and is the most direct way to see how Forever runs on your own machine before November 4, 2026.
