About Tanaris
Tanaris is the desert at the end of the world, a sea of dunes where the goblins of Gadgetzan built a neutral trading town. But what draws most people here is what lies beneath: the Caverns of Time, the sanctum of the bronze dragonflight, where Nozdormu’s brood watches over the timeline itself.
Tanaris has been at the edge of an old war too. When the qiraji swarmed out of Silithus, the insectoid horde crashed into the Caverns of Time, and only the arrival of the bronze dragon Anachronos, with the help of the other dragonflights and the night elves, drove them back and sealed Ahn’Qiraj. In the north-west, the Sandfury trolls of Zul’Farrak keep watch over their ancient city.
Gadgetzan, the neutral goblin town at the heart of the desert, is a busy base for players in their forties. Zul’Farrak sits in the north-west of the dunes, and the Caverns of Time lie hidden in the east.

Tanaris Leveling Guide for the Alliance, Levels 40–54
Tanaris is the big desert on the south-east coast of Kalimdor, and the base for every faction is the goblin town of Gadgetzan. Almost all the quests start there and run in short loops: the Wastewander bandits to the south-east, the pirates of Lost Rigger Cove on the coast, the Centipaar insects and Dunemaul ogres to the west and Thistleshrub Valley furthest west.
Monsters run from level 40 to 45 Wastewanders and Southsea pirates to level 46 to 49 Dunemaul ogres, with Gor'marok the Ravager at 49. Every quest item is a quest-only drop, so there is nothing to buy at the auction house first.
