About Zul'Farrak
Rising out of the shimmering heat mirages of northern Tanaris stands Zul'Farrak, the ancient sandstone bastion of the isolated Sandfury trolls. Millennia before desert sands swallowed their oasis empire, these weathered, sand-scoured stalkers inhabited these cyclopean plazas. Fiercely territorial and bound to dark voodoo loa, the Sandfury have fiercely guarded their stepped pyramids against foreign treasure hunters with poisoned blowdarts and desert drakes.
Unlike gloomy catacombs, Zul'Farrak is completely open to Tanaris’s blinding desert sky, granting adventurers the rare privilege of riding mounts between courtyards. Yet the openness is deceptive: patrols of stealthy shadow hunters, reanimated skeletal thralls summoned by Witch Doctor Zum'rah, and vicious scarabs swarm every stone culvert. At the city's heart looms the great execution terrace—an awe-inspiring stepped pyramid where strike teams rescue imprisoned goblin saboteurs and Sergeant Bly in a desperate, hundred-troll stand against unrelenting assault waves.
Beyond the chieftain’s throne lies the sacred pool where the ancient three-headed hydra Gahz'rilla slumber beneath subterranean waters. Only groups that undertook the perilous pilgrimage to the Hinterlands to forge the Mallet of Zul'Farrak can strike the massive bronze gong, summoning the beast from the depths for the ultimate test of desert endurance.
First Run
- Located in the northwestern desert dunes of Tanaris; ride through the ancient sandstone megaliths directly into the instance portal.
- Target level 42 to 46. The pyramid stairs gauntlet and Gahz'rilla punish overextended mana pools; bring abundant water and ranged crowd control.
- During the pyramid defense event, retreat your party to the very top stairs after releasing the cell prisoners. Do not charge down into the courtyard; bottleneck the charging Sandfury waves through AoE slow zones.
- Gahz'rilla remains completely dormant in the sacred pool unless a party member strikes the gong with the forged Mallet of Zul'Farrak.
Veteran Notes
- Eight bosses: Hydromancer Velratha, Gahz'rilla, Antu'sul, Theka the Martyr, Witch Doctor Zum'rah, Nekrum Gutchewer, Shadowpriest Sezz'ziz, and Chief Ukorz Sandscalp.
- Eight attached quests, with Chief Ukorz dropping Sang'thraze and Antu'sul dropping Jang'thraze—which combine into the legendary epic greatsword Sul'thraze the Lasher.
- Mounting is permitted throughout the entire instance, dramatically accelerating travel times and wipe recoveries.
Zul'Farrak Route & Boss Strategy
Zul'Farrak is an open-air troll city in the sand, and you choose your own way around it: bosses stand in ruins, a cave, a graveyard and at a sacred pool, all around one great pyramid. The pyramid is the heart of the run, a stairway battle against a hundred trolls beside five prisoners you set free. Clear the outer bosses first and climb last. A full run takes a little over an hour.
The Outer City
- Packs of three trolls stand along the sandy streets, with scarabs between the ruins. Witch Doctors heal, so control or interrupt them first.
- Pick up Troll Temper from the trolls and Uncracked Scarab Shells from the scarabs as you go; both quests fill on the way round.
- Zerillis, a rare troll, often patrols near the start.
Theka the Martyr
Boss- Fevered Plague
- A disease that damages over time.
- Theka Transform
- He takes scarab form for the last third of the fight.
- He kneels in a ruin ringed by scarabs. Clear the scarabs before the pull; they all come at once if you do not.
- Horde players read the Tablet of Theka beside him for The Spider God.
Antu'sul
Optional- Healing Wave
- A large heal. Interrupt it.
- Earthgrab Totem
- Roots players near it.
- Summon Servants
- Calls elite basilisks through the whole fight.
- The most dangerous fight in the city, and it starts by itself: he attacks as soon as anyone walks near his basilisk cave. Gather the party and drink before you approach.
- His Servants are elite and stay after he dies. The tank holds them, the party kills Antu'sul fast, then finishes the basilisks.
Witch Doctor Zum'rah
Boss- Shadow Bolt Volley
- Shadow damage to everyone near him.
- Healing Wave
- A slow heal. Interrupt it.
- Ward of Zum'rah
- A ward that keeps raising the dead. Kill it.
- He waits in the graveyard, and he raises zombies from every grave left unopened. Open the graves and kill what comes out before you talk to him.
- With the graveyard empty he is a weak caster with long casts.
The Pyramid
- Kill the Sandfury Executioner at the top of the stairs for the Executioner's Key, and rest. Opening the cages starts the event and it cannot be paused.
- Sergeant Bly and his four companions fight beside you while trolls climb the stairs in waves for several minutes. Hold the top of the stairs and let the trolls come to you; never chase down the steps.
- Area damage carries this fight. Healers keep the prisoners alive, because their help counts.
Nekrum Gutchewer
Boss- Fevered Plague
- A disease that damages over time.
- He and the shadow priest come up the stairs after the last wave. The tank takes Nekrum and holds him while the priest dies.
- Alliance players loot Nekrum's Medallion.
Shadowpriest Sezz'ziz
Boss- Heal
- Heals himself and Nekrum. Interrupt it.
- Psychic Scream
- Fears players near him.
- Kill him first and keep his heals interrupted.
Bly's Crew
- After the stairs the five walk down to the sealed door. Speak to Weegli Blastfuse and he blows it open.
- Then speak to Sergeant Bly. He refuses to hand over the Divino-matic Rod and the whole crew turns on you. Kill Bly for the rod.
Chief Ukorz Sandscalp
Boss- Cleave
- Hits everyone in front of him.
- Enrage
- He hits harder at low health.
- He waits behind the door with his bodyguard Ruuzlu. Tank both facing away from the party and kill them one at a time.
Hydromancer Velratha
Boss- Healing Wave
- A large heal. Interrupt it.
- She stands by the sacred pool. She drops the Tiara of the Deep for the quest of the same name.
Gahz'rilla
Optional- Freeze Solid
- Freezes one player in place.
- Gahz'rilla Slam
- Throws everyone near her into the air.
- The hydra answers only the gong at the pool, and the gong only the Mallet of Zul'Farrak. One mallet in the party is enough. It is made in the Hinterlands: take the Sacred Mallet from Qiaga the Keeper at the Altar of Zul, then use it at the altar on top of Jintha'Alor.
- Clear around the pool and fight with your backs to a wall, so the slam cannot throw anyone into another pack.
- Her Electrified Scale is the quest item for Gahz'rilla.
