Layering and Phase Refresh

5-Minute WarningRefresh Now

Open World Systems

Forever tells you before it moves you to another copy of the zone. Use those five minutes, and the change costs you nothing.

What Layering Does

A zone in Forever is not one place. It runs as several identical copies, and you are assigned to one of them when you arrive. Your character and quest log follow you everywhere, but each copy keeps its own mobs, gathering nodes, and crowd of players.

That is why two people standing at the same coordinates can be invisible to each other, and why a herb node that was there a moment ago is gone after a loading screen. The number of copies goes up when a zone fills and down when it empties, which means the server sometimes has to move you.

In Classic this happened without warning. Forever adds a notice first.

Reading the Refresh Warning

When the server is about to move you, a panel appears telling you a zone refresh is coming. You have five minutes before it happens on its own.

  • Refresh Now triggers the change immediately. Use it the moment you are standing somewhere safe.
  • Okay hides the panel without cancelling anything. The timer keeps running.
  • After you hide it, a small arrow near the chat box on the left of your screen shows the time you have left. Select the arrow to bring the panel back.

There is no way to refuse the change. The only choice you get is whether it lands at a moment you picked or a moment the timer picked.

When to Refresh Early

Treat the warning as a five-minute window to finish the pull you are in, bank what you are carrying, and move. Then trigger it yourself.

Refresh hereWhy it works
A road or a flight pathNothing hostile spawns on top of you, and you can remount straight away.
A town or a campGuards cover the area, and vendors and trainers are there if the new layer is busy.
Your own campsiteYou keep your rested bonus and profession buffs while you wait out the timer.
Wait it out insteadWhat can go wrong
Mid-pull or at low healthRespawned mobs can appear on top of you the moment the layer swaps.
Deep in an elite area or a caveA fresh layer restores every pack you cleared on the way in.
Halfway through an escort or a timed questQuest NPCs and ground pickups belong to the old layer and can despawn.

What Changes on the New Layer

You keep everything that belongs to your character. The world around you is the part that is swapped, and it can go either way.

  • Mobs. A camp you just cleared can be fully respawned, and anything hostile standing where you are will notice you straight away. It can also work in your favour, and you arrive in an area someone else has already cleared.
  • Gathering nodes. Herb and mining spawns are per copy, so a picked-over area can be full again. This is the one part of a refresh worth looking forward to.
  • Quest objects. Ground pickups and quest mobs belong to the old copy. If you were two steps from an objective, expect to walk back to it.
  • Other players. Everyone around you changes. A quiet layer can turn into a contested one, and the group you were queuing with will need to reform to pull you back together.

Hardcore and Group Play

Blizzard built the warning with Hardcore in mind, where a forced phase at the wrong moment is not an inconvenience but a dead character. Every player gets the same control, whichever ruleset you are on.

For group play, the practical rule is unchanged from Classic: forming a party normally pulls members onto the same copy of the zone. If a friend vanished while you were questing together, group up before you go looking for them. After a refresh, check that you are still together before starting the next pull.

Common Questions

What is layering in WoW Forever?

Every zone runs several identical copies at once, and you are placed in one of them when you enter. The copies share your character and your quest log, but each one tracks its own mobs, herb and mining nodes, and players. Blizzard scales the number of copies up and down as a zone fills or empties.

What does the zone refresh notification mean?

It means the server is about to move you to a different copy of the zone. Forever gives you five minutes of warning before the move happens, so you can finish what you are doing and stand somewhere safe first.

Can I refresh early?

Yes. The notification has a Refresh Now button that triggers the change immediately. Pressing it while you are standing somewhere safe is better than being moved at a random moment five minutes later.

I dismissed the warning. How do I get it back?

Selecting Okay only hides the panel. A small arrow stays near the chat box on the left of your screen with the remaining time; select it to bring the notification back, then use Refresh Now when you are ready.

Why did the player I was questing with disappear?

You are on different copies of the zone. Forming a group normally pulls party members onto the same layer, which is the usual fix when you and a friend cannot see each other in the open world.

Does a layer change reset my quest progress?

No. Your character, quest log, and loot stay with you. Only the world around you is swapped, so mobs you killed can be alive again and objects you had not picked up yet may be gone.
