About Dire Maul

Veiled beneath the primal rainforest canopy of central Feralas lies Eldre'Thalas, the crown jewel of ancient Highborne academia. Spared from the Great Sundering through impenetrable wards, the secretive Shen'dralar elves under Prince Tortheldrin hoarded thousands of years of arcane lore and forgotten relics. But when the Well of Eternity imploded, the loss of their magical font plunged the immortal Highborne into excruciating withdrawal.

Prince Tortheldrin sought salvation in blasphemy. Venturing into demonic pacts, he summoned and imprisoned the colossal voidfiend Immol'thar beneath the central sanctuary, siphoning the beast’s demonic agony to sustain the immortality of his inner circle. The unchecked corruption warped the city's gardens into the toxic overgrowth of Warpwood, while brutal Gordok ogres breached the outer courtyards, establishing a violent tribal dominion amidst shattered marble colonnades.

The complex features three legendary, interconnected wings: Dire Maul East, an overgrown fungal jungle overseen by Alzzin the Wildshaper; Dire Maul West, where Tortheldrin clings to his demonic tether; and Dire Maul North, home to the Gordok ogre monarchy. North offers classic's premier strategic puzzle: the 'Tribute Run,' where clever groups bypass every patrolling ogre boss using grease, disguises, and frost traps to execute King Gordok directly and claim the richest bounty chest in the realm.

First Run

  • Situated inside the colossal circular stone arena of central Feralas, with portals to East, West, and North arranged around the open courtyard.
  • Target level 54 to 60. West and North wing doors require the Crescent Key, acquired by pursuing and defeating the evasive imp Pusillin through Dire Maul East.
  • The Tribute Run demands absolute pacifism toward non-king bosses: utilize Ogre Tannin disguises, goblin engineering booby-traps, and line-of-sight skips to defeat King Gordok cleanly for maximum tribute loot.
  • In Dire Maul West, five glowing arcane crystal pylons must be de-energized across the courtyard to collapse the forcefield imprisoning Immol'thar before confronting Prince Tortheldrin.

Veteran Notes

  • Nineteen encounters across three wings: Zevrim, Hydrospawn, Alzzin (East); Tendris, Immol'thar, Tortheldrin (West); Guard Mol'dar, Captain Kromcrush, King Gordok (North).
  • Fifteen attached quests, including Mage Rank 7 Conjure Water tomes, Royal Seal class trinket turn-ins, and epic Warlock/Paladin mount sanctums.
  • The Gordok Tribute chest delivers unmatched pre-raid gear, including the Rod of the Ogre Magi and Barbarous Blade, making it an enduring gold and gear engine.

Dire Maul Route & Boss Strategy

Dire Maul is three separate dungeons in one ruined city. East is the shortest and the place to start, because the imp there carries the Crescent Key that opens the other two. West is the Highborne quarter, with a caged demon and the prince who feeds on it. North belongs to the ogres, and it can be run two ways: kill everything, or kill only the king and collect his Tribute. Each wing takes about an hour.

  1. East

    • Satyrs, treants and lashers fill overgrown courtyards. The Whip Lashers come in swarms and die to area damage; the satyr packs want a kill order.
    • The imp Pusillin stands near the entrance. Speak to him and he runs; follow and speak to him again at each stop. The fifth time he fights.
  2. Pusillin

    Boss
    Blast Wave
Fire damage and a daze to everyone near him.
    Fireball
    Fire damage to one player.
    • His last stop is a small room up a ramp near the end of the wing. He grows large and calls imps; kill the imps with area damage, then the imp himself.
    • He drops the Crescent Key. Keep it: it opens West, North and the library.
  3. Lethtendris

    Optional
    Shadow Bolt Volley
Shadow damage to everyone near her.
    Void Bolt
Heavy Shadow damage to one player.
    • A blood elf on a platform with her imp Pimgib. Kill Pimgib first, then her.
    • She drops Lethtendris's Web for the quest.
  4. Hydrospawn

    Boss
    Riptide
Frost damage and a slow in front of him.
    Massive Geyser
Throws players near him into the air.
    • A water elemental in the pool below the conservatory. He calls small Hydrolings; kill them as they come.
    • Tank him facing away from the party.
  5. Zevrim Thornhoof

    Boss
    Sacrifice
Pins one player on the altar and drains them, healing himself.
    Intense Pain
Shadow damage to everyone near him.
    • The satyr stands at an altar on the upper level. Heal the sacrificed player hard; nothing frees them early.
    • His death frees Old Ironbark below. Speak to the treant, now Ironbark the Redeemed, and he walks ahead and breaks down the door to Alzzin.
  6. Alzzin the Wildshaper

    Boss
    Wild Regeneration
In tree form he heals himself. Interrupt it.
    Enervate
    Drains mana from one player.
    Wither
    A disease that cuts strength.
    • He changes between satyr, tree and wolf through the fight. Tank him in the middle of his sunken chamber.
    • At low health a swarm of imps pours in. Kill them with area damage or finish Alzzin quickly.
    • After the fight, players on Shards of the Felvine use the Reliquary of Purity on the Felvine Shard that appears.
  7. West

    • The door needs the Crescent Key. Ghosts, ancients and arcane creatures hold a ring of gardens around the demon's prison.
    • Five pylons power the prison. Each is guarded by Arcane Aberrations and Mana Remnants; kill the guards around a pylon and it shuts down. All five must be dark before Immol'thar can be touched, which also completes The Madness Within.
  8. Tendris Warpwood

    Boss
    Grasping Vines
    Roots everyone near him.
    Trample
    Damages everyone near him.
    • The ancient in the first courtyard calls every Ironbark Protector still alive when he is attacked. Kill all of them first.
  9. Illyanna Ravenoak

    Boss
    Multi-Shot
    Arrows at several players.
    Volley
    Arrows over an area.
    Concussive Shot
    Dazes one player.
    • A ghostly huntress on the upper terrace with her bear Ferra. Kill the bear first, then close on her so she has to fight in melee.
  10. Magister Kalendris

    Boss
    Mind Blast
    Shadow damage to one player.
    Dominate Mind
    Takes control of one player.
    Shadowform
He deals more Shadow damage and takes less Physical.
    • A shadow priest on the walkway above the gardens. Interrupt what you can and control whoever he takes over.
  11. Tsu'zee

    Optional
    • A rare spawn among the ghosts of the upper level, absent on most runs.
  12. Immol'thar

    Boss
    Eye of Immol'thar
Summons floating eyes that attack the party.
    Portal of Immol'thar
Pulls a distant player to him.
    Infected Bite
    A disease on the tank.
    Frenzy
He attacks faster at low health.
    • With the five pylons dark the barrier drops. Clear the small demons inside the prison before the pull.
    • Kill the eyes as they appear. Healers expect to be pulled into melee and walk straight back out.
  13. Prince Tortheldrin

    Boss
    Arcane Blast
    Arcane damage and a knockback.
    Whirlwind
    Hits everyone near him.
    Summon Player
Pulls a distant player to him.
    • He stands in the library and turns hostile only when Immol'thar is dead. Tank him against a wall, and melee step out of the Whirlwind.
    • The Shen'dralar in the library take the class books and Elven Legends; the Treasure of the Shen'dralar is under the stairs.
  14. Lord Hel'nurath

    Optional
    • He appears only at the end of the warlock ritual for Dreadsteed of Xoroth, held in Immol'thar's empty prison.
  15. North

    • The door needs the Crescent Key. Decide before the first pull which run this is.
    • In a full clear you kill every guard and captain and loot each of them. In a Tribute run you kill only King Gordok: every boss left alive adds to the chest the ogres offer their new king, and the living guards hand out long buffs afterward. The steps below give both.
  16. Guard Mol'dar

    Boss
    Shield Bash
    Interrupts casting.
    Knock Away
    Throws the tank back.
    • He patrols the first hall. Tribute runs wait for him to walk away and slip past. The Gordok Courtyard Key that opens the next door drops from him and from the ogres of these first halls.
  17. Stomper Kreeg

    Optional
    War Stomp
    Stuns everyone near him.
    Whirlwind
    Hits everyone near him.
    Drunken Rage
He hits harder at low health.
    • A drunk ogre in a side yard off the route. Tribute runs leave him be; alive, he sells drinks afterward.
  18. Guard Fengus

    Boss
    Shield Bash
    Interrupts casting.
    Knock Away
    Throws the tank back.
    • He patrols the open courtyard. Tribute runs hug the wall behind his back. The chest in the courtyard holds the Gordok Shackle Key.
  19. Knot and the Ogre Suit

    • Use the shackle key on the goblin Knot Thimblejack in the courtyard for Free Knot!. He then teaches The Gordok Ogre Suit: four Bolts of Runecloth, eight Rugged Leather, two Rune Threads and the Ogre Tannin from the basket on the upper level. Bring the materials with you, and expect an ambush when you take the tannin.
    • A Tribute run needs one suit. It lasts ten minutes, so put it on only at the captain's door.
  20. Guard Slip'kik

    Boss
    Shield Bash
    Interrupts casting.
    Knock Away
    Throws the tank back.
    • He patrols the corridor past a broken trap. Repair the trap with a Thorium Widget and Frost Oil and it freezes him solid as he walks over it; Tribute runs walk past him then.
  21. Captain Kromcrush

    Boss
    Intimidating Shout
    Fears everyone near him.
    Mortal Cleave
Hits those in front of him and halves their healing.
    • He guards the king's door. In a Tribute run, the player in the ogre suit speaks to him and he storms off to settle a score, leaving the door open.
    • In a full clear he calls two guards at low health. Fight him away from the door and control the guards.
  22. Cho'Rush the Observer

    Boss
    • The king's advisor fights beside him and heals. In a full clear, kill him first. In a Tribute run he must live: control or interrupt him and put all damage into the king.
  23. King Gordok

    Boss
    Mortal Strike
    Halves healing on the tank.
    War Stomp
    Stuns everyone near him.
    Berserker Charge
    Charges a distant player.
    • Tank him near the throne with ranged players spread out behind.
    • When he dies, Mizzle the Crafty arrives and names the party king. He is the one who presents the Tribute chest. Captain Kromcrush returns for Unfinished Gordok Business, and the guards you spared give their buffs when you speak to them.
