Library Book Rewards Retuned: Necklaces Now Uncommon

October 5, 2026 · Systems

The October 1 beta build trimmed the ten-book necklaces to Uncommon and opened the Field Researcher's Loop to every class. Old and new stats, side by side.

The library book hunt is still one of the best side projects in World of Warcraft: Forever, but its payout looks different since the October 1 beta build. The ten-book necklaces dropped from Rare to Uncommon and lost half their stats, while the ring from the second milestone shed its Rogue-only tag and became a reward any class can wear.

In short: the first milestone was trimmed, the second was opened up. Here is exactly what each reward was, what it is now, and whether the trip around Azeroth still earns its place in your leveling plan.

Friend of the Library: A Leveling Necklace, No Longer a Rare

Donating ten different books to your faction’s librarian completes Friend of the Library and lets you choose one of two necklaces. In the first weeks of the beta these were Rare items that outclassed almost anything a level 20 character could put in the neck slot. The October 1 build brought them back in line with other quest rewards of that level.

Necklace Before Now
Scholarly Pendant Rare, item level 25, +6 Stamina, +4 Spirit Uncommon, item level 23, +3 Stamina, +2 Spirit
Erudite’s Amulet Rare, item level 25, +6 Stamina, +4 Agility Uncommon, item level 23, +3 Stamina, +2 Agility

The choice itself is unchanged: Spirit for casters and healers, Agility for everyone who swings or shoots. What changed is the weight of the prize. Where the old necklace was a reason to detour across two continents at level 19, the new one is a solid neck piece for a slot that is usually empty at that level, and a fair reward for books you pick up along the way.

Greater Friend of the Library: One Ring Opens to Every Class

Keep donating after the first milestone and Greater Friend of the Library offers a choice of two rings. Both stay Rare. Both moved from item level 40 down to 35, which puts them closer to the levels where players will actually complete the quest.

Ring Before Now
Field Researcher’s Loop Rare, item level 40, +7 Stamina, +7 Agility, +7 Strength, Rogue only Rare, item level 35, +7 Stamina, +7 Agility, any class
Philanthropist’s Ring Rare, item level 40, +6 Intellect, up to 10 spell damage and healing Rare, item level 35, +5 Intellect, up to 10 spell damage and healing

The Field Researcher’s Loop is the real story. In earlier builds it was locked to Rogues, which left Hunters, Warriors, Feral Druids, and Enhancement Shamans without a physical option at this milestone. The ring gave up its Strength to pay for the lower item level, and in exchange every class can now equip it. The Philanthropist’s Ring barely moved: one point of Intellect, with its spell power intact.

For casters the second milestone is as good as it ever was. For physical classes other than Rogue, it went from nothing to a Rare ring with two full stats.

Is the Book Hunt Still Worth It?

Yes, with a change of pace. The rewards now favor collecting books as you level over a dedicated sprint for the necklace.

  • Mages lose nothing that matters. Every donated book still pays out a Comprehension Charm, and those Charms feed the Comprehension skill that unlocks your scrolls. The necklace was always a bonus.
  • Agility and Strength users gain a second-milestone ring they could not wear before. If you skipped the library because the long-term prize was Rogue-only, it is back on the table.
  • Everyone else still gets a neck piece at ten books and a Rare ring further on, for the cost of reading bookshelves in places you were already questing.

Action Checklist: Collect as You Go

  1. Pick up books on your normal route. The necklace no longer justifies a level 19 sprint, so grab each book as your quests bring you past it. All 40 book locations.
  2. Hold your books for the right librarian. Alliance players donate to Garion Wendell in Stormwind City, Horde players to Owen Thadd in Undercity. Donation points and coordinates.
  3. Plan your ring choice now. Field Researcher’s Loop for physical damage and tanking, Philanthropist’s Ring for spell casters. Reward details.
  4. Mages, bank your Charms. Each one is progress toward your next scroll. Mage Comprehension guide.
