How Ranking Works Now: Your Points, Not Your Standing
Forever divides PvP progression into two distinct resources. Rank Points advance your rank, while Honor serves as spendable currency. Distinguishing between them makes every tactical choice straightforward.
- Rank Points come from battlegrounds and PvP tasks given in Gadgetzan. Each holiday week boosts one battleground. Ranks have a weekly cap.
- Honor comes from defeating players, finishing battlegrounds and PvP quests, and buys PvP gear. It caps at 25,000, so spend it as you go instead of banking it.
| Question | Classic | Forever |
|---|---|---|
| What decides your rank | Your Honor standing against everyone else on the realm | Rank Points you earn yourself |
| Competing for a slot | Yes, only a few players per realm reach the top | No, every player can reach rank 14 |
| Pace | Weekly standings and decay punish breaks | A weekly cap on ranks, so steady play wins |
| What Honor does | Feeds your standing | A currency you spend on gear |
| Best battleground | Alterac Valley for Honor | Honor is evened out across battlegrounds |
Your rank, your current Rank Points and what you can buy all show on the Player vs. Player tab of the Character pane (C).
The Weekly Routine: Bonuses First, Grinding Last
Because the cap limits how far you can climb each week, the goal is reaching that ceiling in the fewest possible hours. Work through this sequence in order every week.
| Order | Do this | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Field of Honor tasks | Weekly tasks pay Honor and Rank Points together, and weeks 4, 7 and 10 also award a Legacy Point. |
| 2 | PvP tasks in Gadgetzan | The client lists them next to battlegrounds as the two sources of Rank Points. |
| 3 | The holiday battleground | The highlighted battleground pays extra Honor and extra Rank Points during its holiday week. |
| 4 | Your fastest battleground | Measure Rank Points per hour, queue time included. Honor per match does not tell you which map ranks you up fastest. |
Once you hit the weekly cap, pivot to complementary goals: purchase unlocked gear, advance a battleground reputation toward exalted, and stockpile battleground marks for upcoming tiers. When the next reset unlocks new ranks, you will step in fully prepared.
Choosing a Battleground: Measure Rank Points per Hour
Classic habits point straight at Alterac Valley. In Forever, Blizzard evened out Honor across all battlegrounds so you can play the maps you enjoy, and holiday weeks rotate the bonus. Judge each map by what it gives you per hour, queue time included.
| Battleground | Levels | Size | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warsong Gulch | 10–60 | 10v10 | Capture the flag. The first battleground you can queue. |
| Arathi Basin | 20–60 | 15v15 | Hold resource nodes. Rewards map awareness and quick rotations. |
| Darkspear Islands | 30–60 | 15v15 | New in Forever: control points plus a flag carried to your bases. Also builds Darkspear Raiders or Theramore Expeditionary Force reputation. |
| Alterac Valley | 51–60 | 40v40 | The large faction war. No longer the default Honor farm. |
Darkspear Islands stands out as the premier all-rounder: a single queue simultaneously progresses your rank, your Honor pool, a battleground reputation tied to a Legacy Point, and unique map rewards.
Rewards Rank by Rank: What Each Step Unlocks
Advancing in rank unlocks corresponding gear for purchase with Honor. PvP armor follows a structured two-tier progression: purchase the rare set piece with Honor, then acquire an Emboldened Seal between ranks 8 and 13 to upgrade that item directly to epic quality.
| Rank | Unlocks |
|---|---|
| Faction Tabard | |
| Insignia Trinket | |
| Faction Cloak | |
| Faction Necklace | |
| Combat Potions | |
| Elite Faction Tabard | |
| Battle Standard | |
| Elite Wrist Upgrade, Elite Waist Upgrade | |
| Elite Boot Upgrade | |
| Elite Glove Upgrade | |
| Black War Mounts | |
| Elite Shoulder Upgrade, Elite Leg Upgrade | |
| Elite Helmet Upgrade, Elite Chest Upgrade | |
| Weapon Arsenal |
Every class set and piece is on the PvP rank sets list.
Legacy Points from PvP: Twelve on the Table
PvP represents the third-largest pool of Legacy Points behind classes and professions, and your journey toward rank 14 naturally claims most of them along the way.
| Rank | Title | Legacy |
|---|---|---|
| Sergeant | +1 | |
| Knight-Lieutenant / Blood Guard | +1 | |
| Lieutenant Commander / Champion | +1 | |
| Field Marshal / Warlord | +1 | |
| Grand Marshal / High Warlord | +1 |
Four more come from exalted with each battleground's faction, one per battleground:
- Warsong Gulch: Warsong Outriders or Silverwing Sentinels
- Arathi Basin: Defilers or League of Arathor
- Alterac Valley: Frostwolf Clan or Stormpike Guard
- Darkspear Islands: Darkspear Raiders or Theramore Expeditionary Force
The final three points stem from the Field of Honor tasks in weeks 4, 7, and 10. Blizzard integrated these into the Legacy architecture so they remain obtainable in subsequent seasons without penalizing missed weeks. Track all twelve milestones on our Legacy Challenges page.
The Season Plan: Three Phases to Rank 14
The Field of Honor journey spans ten weeks, and its built-in Legacy milestones naturally segment the season into three distinct phases.
Weeks 1–4: Lay the Foundation and Find Your Map
- Reach the weekly rank cap each reset, beginning with the Field of Honor assignments.
- Test every battleground open to your level bracket, tracking Rank Points per match alongside total time invested.
- Rank 3 secures your first PvP Legacy Point; complete the week 4 objective for your second.
Weeks 5–7: Gear Progression and Mid-Tier Ranks
- Commit to your highest-efficiency battleground, rotating to the holiday map whenever active.
- Rank 8 introduces your first Emboldened Seals; upgrade wrist and waist items immediately upon unlocking.
- Rank 7 and the week 7 milestone each contribute an additional Legacy Point.
Weeks 8–10: The Final Push to Rank 14
- Ranks 10, 13, and 14 each award a Legacy Point, with rank 11 unlocking iconic black war mounts.
- Bank sufficient Honor and battleground marks beforehand so you can claim your rank 14 weapon immediately upon arrival.
- Finish the week 10 challenge to claim your final Field of Honor Legacy Point.
Common Questions
Can I reach High Warlord or Grand Marshal in the first week?
No. Ranks have a weekly cap, so rank 14 takes several weeks of steady play however many hours you put into the first one.
Does spending Honor slow my rank down?
No. Honor and Rank Points are separate. Rank Points decide your rank and Honor is what you spend, so buying gear never costs you progress.
Do I have to play every week?
Forever has no realm standings to defend, so a missed week does not knock you down the ladder. Keeping up each week simply means you reach rank 14 sooner.
Which battleground gives the most Rank Points?
Blizzard has evened out Honor across battlegrounds and boosts one map each holiday week. Start with the holiday battleground, then keep the map where your own Rank Points per hour are highest.
Do I need level 60 to start ranking?
No. Warsong Gulch opens at 10, Arathi Basin at 20, Darkspear Islands at 30 and Alterac Valley at 51, and each runs its own level brackets.
Is there rated PvP or an arena?
No. Forever replaces rated PvP with this 14-rank track, which starts over each patch cycle.
