Blizzard’s final pass on racials puts identity ahead of perfect balance. Seven of the nine races changed in the October 26 development notes, updated on October 27: Orcs get their pet-class racial back, Dwarves trade crit damage for hit chance, Trolls and Undead get stronger actives, and Humans, Tauren, and Skyborne shift value from raw combat stats toward regeneration and movement. Night Elves and Gnomes are untouched, and weapon specializations stay out for good.

The timing matters because name reservation is open and many players are locking in a race right now. Below is every number that moved, set against the beta client and Classic, then a role-by-role read on which races came out ahead.

Every Number That Moved: Beta Client, Final Tuning, Classic

The “Beta” column is what the Forever beta client (build 70425) shipped and what our race pages showed until today. These changes are server-side: the newest client tables still carry the old values, so the development notes are the reference.

Race Racial Beta client Final tuning Classic
Human Ruthless 2% critical strike chance 1% Not in Classic
Human The Human Spirit Spirit +5% Spirit +10% Spirit +5%
Dwarf Earth Fury → Artisan’s Precision +2% critical strike damage and healing +1% hit chance with spells and attacks Not in Classic
Orc Savage → Command +1% critical strike chance Hunter and Warlock pet damage +5% Command, pet damage +5%
Orc Blood Fury 3 min cooldown 2 min cooldown 2 min cooldown
Troll Berserking 10 sec 15 sec 10 sec
Undead Touch of the Grave 25 sec internal cooldown 15 sec Not in Classic
Tauren Endurance Health +5%, +2% critical strike damage and healing Health +5% only Health +5%
Tauren Plainsrunning 1% per stack, up to 30%, plus mounted speed 2% per stack, up to 60%, no mounted bonus Not in Classic
Skyborne Wind Blessed Haste +3% Haste +2% New race
Skyborne (Alliance) Read Leyline Regeneration +100% for 30 sec, or 15 min at a Ley Line +50% for 15 sec, 100% while Attuned New race
Skyborne (Horde) Skysight Movement and mounted speed +10% for 30 sec, or 15 min at a convergence +15% for 15 sec, 30% while Charged New race

Two patterns stand out against Classic. Command and the 2-minute Blood Fury are Classic designs coming home, and Endurance is back to the plain 5% Health Tauren always had. What does not come home is the weapon skill racials: Human Sword Specialization and Orc Axe Specialization stay gone, so no future raid weapon will be judged by which race can use it best.

Who Gained, Who Lost: Race by Race

  • Orc, a clear winner for pet classes. A 1% crit passive became 5% pet damage, and Blood Fury now comes up every 2 minutes. Orc Hunters and Warlocks gain the most; Orc Warriors, Rogues, Shamans, and Mages trade a small crit bonus for a more frequent burst.
  • Troll and Undead, straight upgrades. Berserking lasts half again as long, and Touch of the Grave can drain every 15 seconds instead of every 25. Nothing was taken away.
  • Dwarf, a sideways move that favors hit-hungry roles. Hit chance helps every attack and spell land, which matters most for melee and ranged damage dealers and tanks holding threat. Crit-heavy healers lose the Earth Fury bonus.
  • Human, offense down, regeneration up. Half the crit, double the Spirit. Human Priests and Mages keep more mana flowing; Human Warriors and Rogues lose a point of crit.
  • Tauren, the explorer’s race. Endurance no longer adds crit damage or healing, so Tauren healers and damage dealers lose that edge. In return, Plainsrunning reaches 60% movement speed on foot, a big boost for long runs between quests before you ride.
  • Skyborne, toned down but more interesting. Haste drops to 2%, and both faction actives are short by default but much stronger after a visit to the right spot (see below).
  • Night Elf and Gnome, unchanged. Elune’s Light, Quickness, Eureka!, and Expansive Mind keep their beta values.

Which Race Fits Your Role Now

Your role Alliance picks Horde picks Why
Hunter or Warlock Dwarf for Hunter hit; Human or Gnome for Warlock Orc Command is the only racial that boosts your pet; Blood Fury every 2 min stacks on top
Physical melee Dwarf Troll or Orc Dwarf hit, Troll 15-second Berserking, Orc 2-minute Blood Fury
Caster damage Gnome or Dwarf Troll or Undead Eureka! is untouched; Dwarf hit covers spells; Berserking speeds casting; Touch of the Grave procs more often
Healer Human or Alliance Skyborne Troll Spirit +10% and Read Leyline feed mana; Berserking speeds casting; Tauren healers lost crit healing
Tank Dwarf or Night Elf Tauren or Orc Hit chance keeps threat steady; Tauren still has 5% Health and War Stomp
Leveling and world travel Night Elf Tauren or Horde Skyborne Plainsrunning up to 60%, Skysight up to 30% while Charged

The gaps are small. Blizzard describes the result as some races being “slightly more effective” in certain roles, so treat the table as a tiebreaker, not a mandate. If you have already reserved a name, the main reason to rethink is a Horde Hunter or Warlock choosing between Orc and another race, where Command is now the deciding passive.

Skyborne Attuned and Charged: How to Get the Full Bonus

Read Leyline and Skysight now work in two layers. Used anywhere, they last 15 seconds at half strength. Used at the right location, they also grant an hour-long buff that doubles every later use:

  • Attuned (Alliance, Read Leyline): use it at a Ley Line. For one hour, Read Leyline raises Health and Mana regeneration by 100%. It cannot be used while Innervate is active, since Innervate is the stronger effect.
  • Charged (Horde, Skysight): use it at an elemental convergence. For one hour, Skysight raises movement speed by 30%.

Both buffs persist through death and are removed when you enter a raid, so they suit questing, dungeons, and world travel rather than raid nights. On Zephras Isle, the starting quests already take you there: Alliance Skyborne visit the Ley Line at 46.3, 17.9 for Reading the Ley Lines, and Horde Skyborne reach the Elemental Convergence northeast of Yala Windwatcher at 48.3, 20.6 for The Gift of Skysight. Our Zephras Isle guide has both on the map.

Your Next Steps

  1. Check your race’s new numbers on the Races and Racials page, which now shows the final values.
  2. Rethink only if your role flipped, most of all a Horde Hunter or Warlock weighing Orc, using the table above and your class guide.
  3. Plan a Skyborne start around Attuned or Charged with the Skyborne guide and the Zephras Isle quest route.
  4. Reserve the name before the window closes with the name reservation guide.
