About The Barrens
The Barrens were not always barren. Long ago the night elves founded an outpost called Then’Ralore in the lush central wilds of Kalimdor, and that green country later became the dry savanna we call the Barrens. What remains is a sea of dust and cracked earth, the crossroads of the continent.
It was in the Barrens that Thrall’s Horde met the tauren, and the two peoples together crushed a centaur army. The savanna is still contested: quilboar warrens fill the south, the Druids of the Fang guard the ill-fated dream of Wailing Caverns, and Ratchet’s goblins are happy to sell to anyone who arrives at the dock.
The Crossroads, Camp Taurajo, and Ratchet anchor this sprawling savanna, one of the biggest leveling zones on Kalimdor. Wailing Caverns hides in the north, while Razorfen Kraul and Razorfen Downs sit on the southern border.

The Barrens Leveling Guide for the Alliance, Levels 49–58
The Alliance has only a few errands in the Barrens, and they all run through Ratchet: Liv Rizzlefix's Un'Goro ash, Islen Waterseer's Felwood water and the Stone Circle in Marvon's Chest. Nothing here is a grind, and every quest item is a quest-only drop.
1RatchetLevel 49–58
Liv's workshop is at the north end of Ratchet's docks; Marvon's Chest stands inside it, and opening it gives the Stone Circle for The Stone Circle. Islen Waterseer camps on the shore just north of the town; she takes the Corrupt Moon Well Water from Felwood and gives the cleansed water back. The Un'Goro Ash for Volcanic Activity is picked up in Un'Goro Crater.

- 1Liv Rizzlefix 62.5, 38.7: Volcanic Activity; open Marvon's Chest in her workshop for The Stone Circle.
- 2Islen Waterseer 65.8, 43.8: hand in Seeking Spiritual Aid and take Cleansed Water Returns to Felwood.
The Barrens Leveling Guide for the Horde, Levels 10–26
The Barrens is the Horde's big middle zone, a wide plain that carries you from 10 to the mid-twenties. Nearly everything runs through the Crossroads, the fortified camp at the junction of the main roads: you pick up a stack of quests there, circle out through the plains, the camps and the coast, and come back to hand in. Ratchet on the east coast and Camp Taurajo in the south are the two outposts you will use besides.
The plain is big, so the guide goes ring by ring. The first rings are the plains and the Razormane camp next to the Crossroads (monsters 10 to 15), then Ratchet and the beach (12 to 16), the Kolkar and the Dry Hills to the west (up to 20), and finally the Bristleback land and the Field of Giants in the south (up to 26). Orcs, Trolls and Tauren arrive from Durotar by the Far Watch Post. The oasis part includes the quest chain that leads into Wailing Caverns.
1Before You Start: The Auction House
Almost every Barrens quest item is a quest drop that cannot be traded. Two things are worth looking for at the auction house: the Sunscale Feathers for the raptor nests and a Blood Shard of Agamaggan for the Camp Taurajo quest.
If you came from Durotar, bring the Conscript of the Horde quest to the Far Watch Post on the way in.
| Item | Buy | For quest |
|---|---|---|
| Sunscale Feather | 3 | The Angry Scytheclaws |
| Blood Shard | 1 | Blood Shards of Agamaggan |
- Kargal Battlescar at the Far Watch Post 62.3, 19.4: hand in Conscript of the Horde and take Crossroads Conscription (Orcs, Trolls and Tauren), which goes to Sergra at the Crossroads. Skyborne hand in Journey to the Crossroads to Thork.
2The Crossroads: Pick Up the Whole StackLevel 10–12
Everyone you need stands within a few steps of the inn: Sergra by the inn, Thork and Darsok on the tower platform, Helbrim and Gazrog by the north gate, Tonga at the south gate. Take everything before you go out; most of the plains quests are overlapping, so you will clear several at once.
Set your hearthstone at the inn and take the flight path.

- 1Sergra Darkthorn 52.2, 31.0: Plainstrider Menace, The Zhevra, Prowlers of the Barrens and later Echeyakee and The Angry Scytheclaws.
- 2Thork 51.5, 30.9: Disrupt the Attacks and Supplies for the Crossroads. Darsok Swiftdagger 51.6, 30.9: Harpy Raiders.
- 3Gazrog 51.9, 30.3: Raptor Thieves. Apothecary Helbrim 51.4, 30.1: Fungal Spores and Wharfmaster Dizzywig, a crate to take to Ratchet.
- 4Tonga Runetotem at the south gate 52.3, 31.9: The Forgotten Pools Wailing Caverns quest, the first step of the Wailing Caverns chain.
- 5Mankrik 52.0, 31.6: Consumed by Hatred, Lost in Battle and Her Name Is Olgra. Korran 51.1, 29.6: Egg Hunt, for later.
- 6Regthar Deathgate at the Kolkar watch post 45.3, 28.4: Centaur Bracers, then the Kolkar leaders' bounties as you finish them.
3The Plains and the Razormane CampLevel 10–15
The plains around the Crossroads are the easiest ground: plainstriders, Sunscale raptors and zhevras graze in every direction. Kill whatever you meet; the beaks, heads, hooves and claws all drop from them.
The Razormane camp east of town is the first group fight. Water Seekers and Thornweavers hold the western half (10–11), Hunters the middle (11–12), Geomancers and Defenders the eastern half (12–13), and Kreenig Snarlsnout (15) walks among them. Do the three Thork quests together.

- 1The plains north and east of town 53.1, 30.4: seven Plainstrider Beaks, twelve Raptor Heads 52.9, 33.0 from the Sunscale raptors and four Zhevra Hooves 50.8, 34.1.
- 2The plains toward the camp 55.6, 16.3: seven Prowler Claws from the Savannah Prowlers (14–15).
- 3The western half of the Razormane camp 53.6, 24.5: eight Water Seekers, eight Thornweavers and three Hunters for Disrupt the Attacks.
- 4The eastern end of the camp 58.8, 25.8: the Crossroads' Supply Crates, and eight Geomancers and eight Defenders (12–13) with Kreenig Snarlsnout 58.5, 27.0 and his tusk for The Disruption Ends.
- 5Back at the Crossroads 51.5, 30.9: hand in the camp quests and the plains quests.
4Ratchet and the Southsea BeachLevel 9–16
Follow the road southeast to Ratchet, the coastal town. Gazlowe and his helpers have a handful of short errands, and the Southsea pirates camp on the beach south of the town. The pirates (12–14) are a step up from the plains.
The crate of boots and the crate with the lens sit at the south end of the pirate camp, so do the whole beach in one pass.

- 1Gazlowe 62.7, 36.2: Southsea Freebooters, The Missing Shipment and Stolen Booty. Wharfmaster Dizzywig 63.4, 38.5: hand in Helbrim's crate and Gazlowe's ledger, then return the ledger.
- 2Wrenix the Wretched 63.1, 36.3: Parts and Pieces, new in Forever. Sputtervalve 63.0, 37.2: Samophlange.
- 3The beach south of Ratchet 63.6, 43.4: twelve Southsea Brigands (12–13) and six Southsea Cannoneers (13–14) for Southsea Freebooters, and five piles of complicated parts in the sand 62.2, 44.0.
- 4The south end of the pirate camp 62.6, 49.6: the crate of boots, and the lens in the crate just east of it 63.6, 49.3, for Stolen Booty.
- 5Hand in everything at Ratchet 62.7, 36.2.
5Regthar and the KolkarLevel 9–19
The Kolkar centaurs camp on the plains around Regthar Deathgate's watch post, just west of the Crossroads, and that post is the base: every centaur can drop Centaur Bracers, and the three named leaders are marked on the plains. Kolkar Wranglers (12–13) and Stormers (13–14) are the common fighters.
The Forgotten Pools lie in the middle of the camps; wade into the water to explore them. The Laden Mushrooms for Fungal Spores grow around the pools.

- 1The Forgotten Pools 45.3, 22.8: walk into the water to explore them for The Forgotten Pools Wailing Caverns quest, and gather the four Fungal Spores here 45.6, 22.5.
- 2The Kolkar camps 45.8, 22.7: fifteen Centaur Bracers from any centaur you meet.
- 3Barak Kodobane 42.8, 23.5: the Kolkar leader for Kolkar Leaders.
- 4Verog the Dervish 53.1, 41.7: among the Kolkar at the Stagnant Oasis, southeast of the Crossroads.
- 5Hezrul Bloodmark 46.0, 41.1: on the west shore of Lushwater Oasis. Hand all the heads in to Regthar 45.3, 28.4.
6The Dry HillsLevel 12–20
North of the Crossroads, the Witchwing harpies nest all over the Dry Hills; any of them can drop a talon, and the Witchwing Slayers (16–17) hold the western end and carry the rings. Serena Bloodfeather leads them.
Walton and Vrang Wildgore camp a few steps apart below the hills, with a handful of new Forever quests: lion hides, trapped game and a hermit tanner.

- 1The harpy nests 41.9, 14.7: eight Witchwing Talons for Harpy Raiders.
- 2The western Dry Hills 40.2, 16.0: six Harpy Lieutenant Rings from the Witchwing Slayers for Harpy Lieutenants, and Serena Bloodfeather's head 39.2, 12.2.
- 3Walton 42.0, 11.4: Unwelcome Guests and Trouble in the Valley. Vrang Wildgore 43.8, 12.2: Bruised Pride and Lion Hides, The Hermit Tanner and Vrang's Game.
- 4The plains east of the hills 43.1, 15.0: six Savannah Lion Hides from the Savannah Patriarchs and eight pieces of Trapped Game from the traps among them 42.9, 15.0, and Benedict's Orders 41.8, 15.6 for Trouble in the Valley.
7The Sludge Fen and the Mor'shan RampartLevel 10–18
East of the Dry Hills, the Venture Co. camp holds the Samophlange quests from Ratchet: the control console west of the Sludge Fen, then Wenikee at the Mor'shan Rampart, then the shredder in the camp itself.
Close the three valves around the drill, use the console again, then take the Console Key from Tinkerer Sniggles. Wizzlecrank's escort needs you to stay close and kill whatever attacks him.

- 1The control console at the research site 52.3, 11.6: close the three valves, use the console again and take the Console Key from Tinkerer Sniggles 52.8, 10.4.
- 2Wenikee Boltbucket at the Mor'shan Rampart 49.0, 11.2: Nugget Slugs, fifteen Nugget Slugs from the tool buckets around the Venture Co. drill 55.6, 8.8, and later Rilli Greasygob.
- 3Wizzlecrank's Shredder 56.5, 7.5: Ignition, the key is carried by Supervisor Lugwizzle 56.3, 8.6, then The Escape, which ends at Sputtervalve in Ratchet.
- 4The Boulder Lode Mine in the northeast corner 59.6, 3.8: the Cats Eye Emerald for Miner's Fortune, dropped by the Venture Co. Overseers and Enforcers (14–18).
- 5Echeyakee's lair 55.9, 17.2: use Sergra's horn to call the white lion (16) for Echeyakee.
8The Oasis Loop and Wailing CavernsLevel 10–17
Southeast of the Crossroads, the Stagnant Oasis is Tonga's next stop, and the Raptor Grounds southwest of it are the third. The Altered Beings are the Oasis Snapjaws (15–16) of Lushwater Oasis. Together with the Forgotten Pools, these quests are the road into Wailing Caverns.
Do them in order and you can finish the whole chain in one trip around the oasis.

- 1The Stagnant Oasis 55.6, 42.8: test the seeds at the bubbling fissure on the east bank for The Stagnant Oasis Wailing Caverns quest.
- 2The Raptor Grounds 52.5, 46.6: use the Sunscale Feathers on the three nests for The Angry Scytheclaws; Sunscale Scytheclaws (16–18) guard them and drop the feathers.
- 3Lushwater Oasis 48.1, 39.9: eight Altered Snapjaw Shells from the snapjaws for Altered Beings Wailing Caverns quest.
- 4Tonga Runetotem 52.3, 31.9: hand in each part and take Mura Runetotem, which sends you to the Sepulcher.
- 5The Sunscale raptors on the plains 61.2, 34.0: five Intact Raptor Horns for Mebok Mizzyrix's Raptor Horns Wailing Caverns quest, which you hand in at Ratchet.
9Northwatch Hold and the Ratchet BountiesLevel 13–20
At 13 or higher, the second Ratchet visit opens the harder jobs: bounties for Baron Longshore and Bruuz, the guns of Northwatch Hold, and Gilthares's escort. Northwatch is further down the coast, with Captain Fairmount (20) and two cannoneers (19) as the hardest kills.
Bruuz is an elite in the harbour, so group up for him.

- 1Captain Thalo'thas Brightsun 62.3, 39.0: The Guns of Northwatch. The bounties on Baron Longshore and Bruuz, the second new in Forever, are both handed in to Gazlowe 62.7, 36.2.
- 2Baron Longshore on the southern beach 64.2, 47.1: kill the baron (16) for his head.
- 3Bruuz in the harbour 63.7, 38.7: kill Bruuz for his dorsal fin.

- 5Gilthares Firebough inside the hold 62.0, 55.0: Free From the Hold, an escort back to Ratchet; Theramore soldiers attack on the way out.
10Camp Taurajo and the Bristleback LandLevel 14–25
Follow the Gold Road south to Camp Taurajo. The Bristleback camps spread over the plains north of it, and every Bristleback drops a tusk. Mankrik's wife lies at the north edge, and the Razormane Raiders among them carry Olgra's Adornments.
Keep one Blood Shard from the quilboar for Mangletooth. West of the road, the Razormane hold Blackthorn Ridge with three leaders; Lok (25) is the strongest.

- 1Jorn Skyseer 44.9, 59.1: Enraged Thunder Lizards and Cry of the Thunderhawk, whose Thunderheads and Thunderhawk Cloudscrapers are on the plains just south of camp, and Ishamuhale, a big Sunscale raptor north of the Ratchet road 59.8, 30.6.

- 4The north end of the plains 45.1, 55.3: sixty Bristleback Quilboar Tusks for Consumed by Hatred, Olgra's Adornments 47.1, 52.7 and Mankrik's wife 49.3, 50.3.

11The Field of Giants and Bael ModanLevel 17–26
South of Camp Taurajo, the Silithid Mounds dot the Field of Giants. Eggs lie in the mounds and Silithid Swarmers come out to defend them. Gann Stonespire waits in a camp further south, and the Bael'dun dwarves dig at Bael Modan beyond it.
Prospector Khazgorm (26) carries the journal; pull him alone. The Bael'dun fortress on the east side holds the three items for Gann's second quest.

- 1The Silithid Mounds 44.9, 69.4: twelve Silithid Eggs for Egg Hunt.
- 2Gann Stonespire 45.9, 77.0: Gann's Reclamation and Revenge of Gann. Sulhasa 47.8, 77.6: Field to Clear, new in Forever: seven Stormhides 43.2, 78.4 and seven Hecklefang Stalkers (22–23).
