Zone Map & Leveling Guide

Darkshore, the moonlit coastline of Auberdine and the night elf ruins north of Ashenvale.

About Darkshore

Darkshore is the long, misty coast where the night elves’ old world meets the sea. The ruins of Ameth’Aran and Bashal’Aran are the remains of a night elf civilization that was ancient before humans built their first cities, and Blackfathom Deeps was once a temple above the waves before the Sundering dragged it under.

It was on these shores that the Cenarion Circle planted Teldrassil after the Third War, and the harbor town of Auberdine has been the night elves’ gateway ever since. The furbolgs of the inland forests have fallen to a strange madness, and the boats from Menethil and Rut’theran come to a coast that looks deceptively peaceful.

Auberdine is the gateway between Teldrassil and the mainland, with long stretches of coastline, ancient ruins, and restless furbolgs all around it. Blackfathom Deeps lies to the south, near the border with Ashenvale.

Darkshore Leveling Guide for the Alliance, Levels 10–22

Darkshore is the long coastal strip south of Teldrassil, and its quest hub is the fishing village of Auberdine. Night elves arrive by hippogryph with a package to deliver, and everyone else comes by boat from Stormwind. Most of the zone is a walk up and down one road, so you always know where the next job is.

The guide runs north to south and from easy to hard: the shore and the first bear hills near the village (monsters level 10 to 14), the ruins of Ameth'Aran and Bashal'Aran (up to 15), the tower and Cliffspring Falls to the northeast, then the long walk south to the Grove of the Ancients, where the monsters reach 20. You will be back in Auberdine to hand in several times, so use its inn.

1Before You Start: The Auction House

Almost every quest item in Darkshore is a quest drop that cannot be traded. The one exception is the fish for The Family and the Fishing Pole: Darkshore Groupers can be caught from the pier, or bought, and the quest takes six.

Night Elves arrive carrying Flight to Auberdine; hand it in to Laird at the docks.

  • Laird at the docks 36.8, 44.3: hand in Flight to Auberdine if you arrived from Teldrassil with it.

2Auberdine: Pick Up the Whole VillageLevel 10–12

Auberdine spreads along one street above the docks, and almost every quest of the first half of the zone starts within a few steps of the inn. Take them all before you leave: the beach, the bear hills, the ruins and the tower are all reachable from the village road.

The flight master is on the hill south of the inn; pick up the flight path and set your hearthstone at the inn.

3The Shore and the DocksLevel 10–13

Start on the beach below the village, where the monsters are the weakest and everything is within a minute of the quest-givers. The crawlers and threshers are low level; the sea creature bones are lying on the shore just south.

Fish from the pier while you are waiting for a boat or between kills if you did not buy the fish.

4The Bear Hills and the Blackwood CampLevel 12–14

East of the village, the Rabid Thistle Bears (13–14) are the first real fight of the zone, and the sick bears feed both Tharnariun quests. The Blackwood furbolg camp lies southeast of them.

Tharnariun's Hope needs a Den Mother (18–19), a tougher bear that lairs in the hills south of Cliffspring Falls, so leave that for later.

Map of Darkshore with the stops of part 4 numbered
  • 1The hills east of Auberdine 38.2, 52.6: twenty Rabid Thistle Bears (13–14) for Cleansing of the Infected, and use the item Tharnariun gave you on one of them for Plagued Lands.

  • 3Back in the village 39.4, 43.5: hand in How Big a Threat? and take Thundris Windweaver, then hand in Cleansing of the Infected and Plagued Lands at Tharnariun 38.8, 43.4.

5Ameth'Aran and the Red CrystalLevel 9–14

South of Auberdine, the ruins of Ameth'Aran hold several quests at once: the highborne ghosts for Thundris, Anaya Dawnrunner's ghost for the pendant, Jai'vhanel the owl for the feather, and the two tablets for Sentinel Tysha. It is a busy ten minutes of picking things up.

The Mysterious Red Crystal sits on a ledge in the eastern mountains; climb there when you have the tube from Glynda.

  • The mountains east of the ruins: climb to the ledge with the Mysterious Red Crystal for The Red Crystal. Fill Glynda's tube at the moonwell in the village first for As Water Cascades.

6Bashal'Aran, the Tower and Cliffspring FallsLevel 12–18

North along the hills, Asterion waits in the ruins of Bashal'Aran. Wild Grells and Vile Sprites fill the ruins, and the Deth'ryll Satyrs hold the eastern edge. The tower and the falls are further northeast, with level 13 to 18 monsters and several quests that are best taken in one trip.

Keep Balthule's letter for Delgren in Ashenvale when you finish; the other quests all end back in Auberdine.

Map of Darkshore with the stops of part 6 numbered
  • 1Asterion in the ruins 44.2, 36.3: the three Bashal'Aran quests. You need eight Grell Earrings 44.6, 36.6, the Ancient Moonstone Seal from a Deth'ryll Satyr 45.5, 36.5, and a visit to the Ancient Flame, which burns in the south of Ameth'Aran.

7The Bay, Mathystra and the Northern CoastLevel 14–20

Back along the coast, two shipwrecks lie on the sea floor in the bay north of Auberdine and each holds a lockbox. Further north, the ruins of Mathystra are the home of the Stormscale naga, the strongest monsters of this half of the zone at level 18 to 21.

Gelkak Gyromast hides on a small island off the ruins, and the three pieces of his key drop from foreststriders, murlocs and reef crawlers.

Map of Darkshore with the stops of part 7 numbered

  • 5The Rod of Deep Dominion 50.4, 14.3: the Stormscale Beastmistress carries it for Holy Diver.

8The Grove of the Ancients and the Master's GlaiveLevel 12–22

The last stretch is the long walk south, past Ameth'Aran, to the Grove of the Ancients. Onu stands in the Grove with Arbal and Kerlonian Evershade asleep beside him. Moonstalker Sires prowl the woods around the Master's Glaive crater, and Murkdeep is on the beach just west of it.

Therylune and Volcor both need an escort out, and Volcor fights on his way, so go in with full health.

Map of Darkshore with the stops of part 8 numbered
  • 1Onu in the Grove 43.5, 76.3: The Master's Glaive and Mathystra Relics; Arbal 43.7, 76.5 gives Swelling Forces, and Kerlonian Evershade 44.4, 76.4 The Sleeper Has Awakened.
  • 2The Master's Glaive crater 38.5, 86.1: the Peerless Eye from the Twilight Disciples and Thugs, the Scrying Bowl and Twilight Tome in the bottom of the crater, and Therylune on its north side 38.6, 87.3.

9Moving On: Ashenvale

Hand in the whole stack at Auberdine and take Trek to Ashenvale from Sentinel Selarin 39.3, 43.5. Ashenvale is the natural next zone, and Balthule's letter, Therylune's turn-in and Kerlonian's escort all end there.
