Zone Map & Leveling Guide

Ashenvale, the ancient night elf forest contested by Astranaar and the Warsong outposts of the Horde.

About Ashenvale

Ashenvale is the forest where the night elves rebuilt after the Sundering. Tyrande Whisperwind and the Sisterhood of Elune settled here to fill the power vacuum left by the fall of the empire, and Cenarius’s children, the keepers of the grove and the woodland dryads, came down from the Moonglade to walk its glades. It is a place where the trees are older than the cities.

It was also here that the Horde and the night elves fought their first war. Orc loggers under Grommash Hellscream cut down whole groves; Mannoroth’s blood poisoned the Warsong clan; Cenarius fell in battle. The scars are still visible, and the outposts of Astranaar, Splintertree Post, and the Warsong Lumber Camp watch each other across the same trees.

It is a lush, sprawling zone with plenty of world PvP. Astranaar holds the forest for the night elves, the Horde logs its edges from Splintertree Post and the Warsong Lumber Camp, and the roads lead on to Darkshore, Felwood, Azshara, and the Warsong Gulch battleground.

Ashenvale Leveling Guide for the Alliance, Levels 15–32

Ashenvale is the big forest between Darkshore and Stonetalon, and the Alliance route runs through it twice: first at 19 to 25 for Maestra's Post, Astranaar and the lake shore, then at 27 to 32 for Raene's Cleansing chain, the Howling Vale and the satyr camps of the east. The bases are Maestra's Post in the west, where Kerlonian's escort from Darkshore ends, and Astranaar on its island in the middle of the zone.

The zone gets harder toward the east: murlocs and naga on the western shore (19 to 21), gnolls, furbolgs and lake elementals around Astranaar (23 to 25), and Xavian and Satyrnaar at the east end (26 to 32) with Forest Song at the road's end. Forever adds the Dragonslayer's Helm, Shield and Lance quests at Mystral Lake.

1Maestra's Post: The Western CampLevel 17–25

Kerlonian Evershade sleeps at the Grove of the Ancients in southern Darkshore. Use the Horn of Awakening to wake him and lead him south along the road into Ashenvale to Liladris Moonriver at Maestra's Post; blow the horn again whenever he falls asleep.

North of the post, plant bundles lie around the ruins of Bathran's Haunt, and the Dark Strand cultists just south of them drop the Glowing Soul Gem.

Map of Ashenvale with the stops of part 1 numbered
  • 1Liladris Moonriver 27.3, 35.6: hand in The Sleeper Has Awakened.
  • 2Delgren the Purifier 26.2, 38.7: hand in Balthule's letter for The Tower of Althalaxx, then take the next parts, a Glowing Soul Gem 31.5, 29.3 and Ilkrud Magthrull's tome 25.3, 60.7 from the Ruins of Ordil'Aran.
  • 3Orendil Broadleaf 26.4, 38.6: Bathran's Hair, five bundles of hair from the plant bundles 30.4, 25.5, then Orendil's Cure, for Pelturas in Astranaar.
  • 4Therysil at the Shrine of Aessina 22.6, 51.9: hand in Therylune's Escape. Teronis' Corpse among the Saltspittle murlocs by Lake Falathim 20.3, 42.3: Raene's Cleansing, the Glowing Gem 20.6, 42.2.
  • 5Talen on the Zoram Strand 14.8, 31.3: The Ancient Statuette 14.2, 20.6 and Ruuzel, the Ring of Zoram 13.6, 24.7 from Ruuzel at the northern tip.

2Astranaar and the Lake ShoreLevel 15–25

Follow the road southeast to Astranaar, on the island in the lake. Raene Wolfrunner and Pelturas Whitemoon give most of the quests. Bind your hearthstone at the inn and take the flight path.

Dal Bloodclaw (25) leads the Thistlefur gnolls at the camp north of Astranaar: clear his guards first, one at a time. The Elune's Tears glow on the small isle east of Astranaar. The Foulweald furbolgs live in the woods south of the road, southeast of Astranaar, with the Den Watcher and the Ursas guarding the den.

Map of Ashenvale with the stops of part 2 numbered
  • 1Raene Wolfrunner 36.6, 49.6: Trek to Ashenvale is handed in here; Raene's Cleansing starts, with Culling the Threat and An Aggressive Defense.
  • 2Pelturas Whitemoon 37.4, 51.8: Elune's Tear, on the isle 46.4, 46.4, The Ruins of Stardust, five handfuls of stardust 33.3, 67.7, and later Fallen Sky Lake.
  • 3Dal Bloodclaw 39.6, 36.3: kill him and take his skull.
  • 4The Foulweald den 50.0, 59.9: one Den Watcher and two Ursas (24–25) for An Aggressive Defense.
  • 5Sentinel Thenysil 34.9, 49.8: On Guard in Stonetalon, for later.

3Mystral LakeLevel 20–25

Sentinel Velene Starstrike stands at the Silverwind Refuge on the east shore of Mystral Lake, and Alonso camps on its west shore. Befouled Water Elementals (23–25) wade in the lake between them: kill them for intact elemental bracers, then use the divined scroll.

Alonso gives three quests for Dragonslayer's pieces: the Helm, the Shield and the Lance, new in Forever.

Map of Ashenvale with the stops of part 3 numbered
  • 1Sentinel Velene Starstrike 49.8, 67.2: Elemental Bracers, five Intact Elemental Bracers from the elementals, then the Divined Scroll 46.6, 69.6.
  • 2Alonso 43.4, 70.4: Dragonslayer's Helm, Dragonslayer's Shield and Dragonslayer's Lance.

4Raene's Cleansing: The Moonwell, the Shrine and the FurbolgsLevel 18–30

Shael'dryn stands by the moonwell in the hills northeast of Astranaar, and the Crazed and Withered Ancients north of the moonwell carry the Wooden Key for the worn chest among them. The hidden shrine sits on the hill southeast of the moonwell; follow the winding path up.

Krolg, a furbolg untouched by the corruption, sits south of the road below Mystral Lake, with Ran Bloodtooth and his guards just east of him.

Map of Ashenvale with the stops of part 4 numbered
  • 1Shael'dryn at the moonwell 53.5, 46.2: the Raene's Cleansing parts, with the Iron Shaft 54.4, 35.4 and the Iron Pommel 75.9, 73.5 in the east.
  • The hidden shrine: re-enchant Dartol's Rod, then return to Shael'dryn and on to Raene.

  • 3Raene 36.6, 49.6: hand in the last part.

5The Howling Vale, Xavian and Forest SongLevel 25–32

West of Maestra's Post, Sentinel Melyria Frostshadow and Illiyana stand together at the western end of the road. The Howling Vale is behind the tunnel; the tome lies in the ruins at its west end. East along the road, Anilia hides at the edge of the satyr camps of Xavian, Geltharis leads them and carries the branch, and the Circle of Imprisonment stands in Satyrnaar.

Forest Song, the night elf outpost at the eastern end of the road, has Kayneth Stillwind. The Forsaken's camp lies in the woods south of it, with the three insane druids together. The second Circle of Imprisonment lies in the valley of Night Run, on the way west.

6Moving On

From Astranaar the road south past Mystral Lake leads into the Talondeep Path tunnel and out into Windshear Crag in Stonetalon Mountains. The route comes back to Forest Song at 57 or higher for Ancient Spirit, which is handed in to Kayneth Stillwind.

Ashenvale Leveling Guide for the Horde, Levels 14–30

The Horde sees Ashenvale from two sides: the coast in the west, where Zoram'gar Outpost stands by the naga strand and the Blackfathom Deeps ruins, and the road east to Splintertree Post and the Warsong Lumber Camp, with Mystral Lake and the Foulweald furbolgs between them. Fly from Ratchet to Zoram'gar and work east.

Monsters run from level 14 to 21 naga on the strand to 23 to 25 furbolgs and elementals in the middle and 23 to 31 hunters, satyrs and the named cats of the east. Forever adds the Dragonslayer's Helm, Shield and Lance at Alonso's camp, marked as you reach them. Astranaar is an Alliance town, so keep to the road as you pass it.

1Zoram'gar Outpost and the Zoram StrandLevel 14–24

Fly from Ratchet to Zoram'gar Outpost on the Ashenvale coast. Muglash walks north up the strand to a naga brazier; put the brazier out, then guard him through the naga waves until Vorsha is dead. The Sapphires of Aku'Mai grow on the rocks at the far north end of the strand, by the Blackfathom Deeps ruins.

The Blackfathom Deeps quests start here with Je'neu Sancrea: the dungeon itself is down the coast in Darkshore.

Map of Ashenvale with the stops of part 1 numbered
  • 1Marukai 11.7, 34.9: Naga at the Zoram Strand, twenty Wrathtail Heads (19–21) 11.8, 31.9. Muglash 12.1, 34.6: Vorsha the Lasher, the escort to the naga brazier 9.6, 27.6.
  • 2Je'neu Sancrea 11.6, 34.3: Trouble in the Deeps and The Essence of Aku'Mai, twenty Sapphires of Aku'Mai at the north end 13.2, 13.5.
  • 3Mitsuwa 11.7, 34.9: Troll Charm, eight Troll Charms from the Troll Chests along the tunnels of Thistlefur Hold 39.9, 34.2.
  • 4Karang Amakkar 11.9, 34.5: Between a Rock and a Thistlefur, eight Thistlefur Avengers and eight Shamans (23–24) 31.7, 38.0, and later King of the Foulweald.
  • 5Thistlefur Hold 41.5, 34.5: Ruul Snowhoof is held deep inside; free him and protect him all the way out for Freedom to Ruul, then he runs home to Night Run.

2Mystral Lake and the FoulwealdLevel 20–27

Follow the main road east past Astranaar and keep to the road. Ursangous, a big grizzly, roams the Ruins of Stardust south of the road, west of Mystral Lake; his paw starts the next hunt quest. Alonso stands on the west shore of Mystral Lake with three quick Dragonslayer quests, and Tideress, a corrupted water elemental, drifts in the lake: her Befouled Water Globe starts a quest for Splintertree.

The Foulweald furbolgs hold the woods east of Mystral Lake, south of the road. Place Karang's Banner on the Foulweald Totem Mound and guard it: the furbolgs come to tear it down, and Chief Murgut comes last.

Map of Ashenvale with the stops of part 2 numbered
  • The Ruins of Stardust: kill Ursangous (25), whose paw is handed in to Senani Thunderheart.
  • 1Alonso 42.0, 69.2: Dragonslayer's Helm, Dragonslayer's Shield and Dragonslayer's Lance.
  • 2Mystral Lake 50.9, 67.4: twelve Befouled Water Elementals (23–25) for Stonetalon Standstill, and Tideress for the globe; finish the quest at the gazebo on the island 48.9, 69.6.
  • 3The Foulweald Totem Mound 56.4, 63.5: Murgut's Totem for King of the Foulweald.

3The Warsong Lumber Camp and Splintertree PostLevel 19–30

Keep east on the road. Torek waits southwest of the Warsong lumber camp; he and his grunts storm the Silverwing Outpost, so let them take aggro and stay with Torek until Duriel Moonfire is dead. Kuray'bin stands at the camp, and the night elf Outrunners stalk the woods southeast of it; they stealth.

Splintertree Post lies north up the road, with Night Run beside it. Sharptalon, a big nightsaber, prowls the woods southeast of the camp, the Felmusk satyrs camp northwest of Splintertree and Shadumbra, a shadow panther, stalks the woods around Raynewood Retreat west of the Felmusk camp.

Map of Ashenvale with the stops of part 3 numbered

4Moving On

From Splintertree or Zoram'gar, fly back to Ratchet and ride on to the Barrens' southern edge. The next stop is the Great Lift down into Thousand Needles.
