Zone Map & Leveling Guide

Stranglethorn Vale, the vast jungle of Booty Bay, Gurubashi trolls, and Zul'Gurub, and a classic leveling hub for the thirties and forties.

About Stranglethorn Vale

Stranglethorn is the heart of the Gurubashi empire, the jungle where an age of trolls rose and fell. In their prime the Gurubashi ruled a wide domain, but when their glory faded they turned to the loa Hakkar the Soulflayer, who promised conquest in exchange for endless blood. The Zandalari eventually came to break the pact and drove Hakkar from the world, but the Gurubashi never recovered.

The Horde and Alliance have since found the jungle’s wild coast a good place to clash. The orcs of Kilrogg’s Bleeding Hollow clan landed in its western jungle because it reminded them of their homeland; Stormwind’s farmers pushed south until raids turned into war. Today Booty Bay is a goblin port at the end of the road, and its trade is the only thing here that everyone can agree on.

From Nesingwary’s Expedition in the north to Booty Bay at the southern tip, hunting camps, pirate coves, and troll ruins crowd the jungle. Stranglethorn is a busy leveling destination and a hotspot for world PvP, and Zul’Gurub waits in the north-east for level 60 raid groups.

Stranglethorn Vale Leveling Guide for the Alliance, Levels 28–45

Stranglethorn Vale is a long jungle with two bases: Nesingwary's Expedition and the Rebel Camp in the north, and the pirate port of Booty Bay on the southern cape. Alliance characters usually come twice: first at 30 to 38, when the hunters' mastery quests and the Rebel Camp's war against the Kurzen carry you through the northern jungle, and again at 37 to 45, when Booty Bay's Bloodsail, gorilla and Zanzil quests fill the south.

The jungle is wide and the roads are long, so the guide groups the work by base: the hunters, the rebels, then the town. The Green Hills of Stranglethorn pages drop from almost every humanoid in the jungle; hand them to Barnil Stonepot as you go.

1Before You Start: The Auction House

Most Stranglethorn quest items cannot be traded. Two are ordinary goods you can buy instead of gathering: the Jungle Remedy that Bad Medicine wants from the Kurzen camp, and the Lesser Bloodstone Ore for Favor for Krazek, which sits far to the east of the jungle.

Lesser Bloodstone Ore4Favor for Krazek

Bad Medicine also needs one Venom Fern Extract from a Kurzen supplies crate. It is a quest item and cannot be traded.

2Nesingwary's Expedition: The Mastery QuestsLevel 30–38

The hunters' tents stand just west of the road, past the Rebel Camp turn-off. Their mastery quests run in steps: young tigers and panthers (30–31) around the camp, adult tigers and panthers (32–33), then elder tigers (34–35), raptors (33–36) and the shadowmaw panthers (37–38) further out. Take each tier as you reach its level.

Sin'Dall, the great tiger, lairs on the hilltop southwest of the camp, with the Lashtail raptors running south of it.

  • 5Sin'Dall on the hilltop 31.5, 15.5: kill the great tiger and take his paw. Ten Shadowmaw Panthers (37–38) stalk the jungle further out 48.1, 20.2.

3The Rebel Camp and the Kurzen CompoundLevel 30–38

Take the road north: Private Thorsen stands on it and the Rebel Camp sits in the hills to the west. The Kurzen rebels hold the camp east of it; work its outer edge, where the Jungle Fighters and Medicine Men stand, and loot the supply crates by the tents.

Bookie Herod's records lie in a hut on the compound's west side, and his strongbox is farther east, by the cave mouth. The Headshrinkers stand deeper in, and the Commandos lurk stealthed around the compound and in the cave.

  • 6Corporal Kaleb 37.7, 3.3: Krazek's Cookery, which goes to Krazek in Booty Bay; the repaired pot comes back to Kaleb with Return to Corporal Kaleb.

4Booty Bay: Pick Up the TownLevel 28–37

Follow the main road south the length of the jungle to Booty Bay on the southern cape. The Salty Sailor Tavern is the tall building over the harbour, and most quest-givers are on its floors or on the docks below. Bind your hearthstone, take the flight path, and read the board.

The first Booty Bay quests send you back north or along the coast, so take them in one trip.

5Green Hills and the Troll RuinsLevel 30–40

Barnil's four chapters need pages from almost every humanoid in the jungle, so collect them along every other route. Chapter II and III pages share a spot in the north of the jungle, and Chapter IV pages are in the south by Booty Bay.

The troll legends are on stone tablets in the ruins of the north and centre of the jungle, each ruin holding one. Shadowmaw Panthers prowl stealthed around them.

  • 4The Skullsplitter ruins east of the road between Nesingwary and Grom'gol 45.6, 41.6: any Skullsplitter can drop the tusks for Kebok's Skullsplitter Tusks, their panthers always do.

6The Bloodsail Buccaneers and the Mistvale GorillasLevel 37–46

On the second pass, Booty Bay's harder quests open up. The Bloodsail Swashbucklers (41–43) walk the shore just north of town, the charts and orders lie in the pirate camp on the Wild Shore south of Booty Bay, and the captains stand on ships anchored off the Wild Shore: Stillwater (45) and Keelhaul (46) on the nearer decks and Fleet Master Firallon (48) on the flagship. Clear each deck first if you go, and take a group or leave it until the end.

Inland, the Mistvale gorilla hills are Witch Doctor Unbagwa's home. Hand in the fangs and stay: three waves of gorillas come, with Mokk the Savage last, so fight at full health.

7Zanzil's Village and the Crystalvein MineLevel 30–45

Ride north to the hills west of the road: Maury Club Foot Wilkins and Jon-Jon the Crow stand together just north of Zanzil's village, and every Zanzil follower can drop the mixture. Chucky Ten Thumbs walks the south of the camp.

Further northeast, the Venture Co. camp at the Crystalvein Mine drops the crystals: the miners, surveyors and foremen carry them. The Cold Eye Basilisks lie on the rocks west of the mine, and the Giant Clams on the floor of the northwest bay hold the pearls, with Gazban swimming among them with the Stone of the Tides.

  • 5The northwest bay 25.0, 23.6: Gazban's Stone of the Tides for The Curse of the Tides, and nine Blue Pearls from the Giant Clams 27.6, 29.2 for Pearl Diving.

8Moving On: Tanaris, Steamwheedle and Beyond

With the northern jungle done at 38 you can go on to Swamp of Sorrows, and the second pass ends with Booty Bay's long-distance errands: Krazek's Tran'rek to Gadgetzan and "Sea Wolf" MacKinley's Stoley's Debt to Steamwheedle Port, both opening in Tanaris.

Stranglethorn Vale Leveling Guide for the Horde, Levels 28–50

Stranglethorn Vale is a long jungle, and the Horde works it from Grom'gol Base Camp on the west side, with Nesingwary's hunters to the north and the pirate port of Booty Bay on the southern cape. You come first at 30 to 38 for the Bloodscalp coast, the Mosh'Ogg hills and the hunters' mastery quests, then again at 40 to 46 for Booty Bay's Bloodsail, gorilla and Zanzil quests and the Skullsplitter ruins, and once more at 45 to 50 for a few hand-ins.

Stay on the road: the jungle beside it is well above your level, and some of its monsters stalk unseen until they strike. The pages of The Green Hills of Stranglethorn drop at about 1% each from the Bloodscalp and Skullsplitter trolls; keep every page you loot and look on the auction house for the rest.

1Arriving at Grom'gol Base CampLevel 30–34

Leave the Undercity by the lift and walk up through the ruins to the zeppelin towers; the Grom'gol zeppelin is the one on the southwest tower. It lands at the tower on the west side of the camp, and the same tower has the zeppelin back to Orgrimmar.

Take every quest in the camp before you head out. The Bloodscalp coast is a short ride west, and the Mosh'Ogg hills are just east.

  • 1Nimboya 32.2, 27.7: Hunt for Yenniku, Headhunting and later Trollbane. Kin'weelay 32.3, 27.7: Bloody Bone Necklaces and The Vile Reef.
  • 2Commander Aggro'gosh 32.2, 28.9: The Defense of Grom'gol. Far Seer Mok'thardin 32.1, 29.2: Mok'thardin's Enchantment.

2Nesingwary's Expedition: The Mastery QuestsLevel 30–38

Follow the road north out of Grom'gol; Nesingwary's hunting camp sits on the hill northeast of the river. Young tigers prowl west of the camp and young panthers south and east. The adult tigers and panthers (32–33) roam the hills east of the camp, the Stranglethorn Raptors (33–34) hunt the clearings west of it, the elder tigers (34–35) roam the hills southwest and the Lashtail Raptors (35–36) further south, toward Grom'gol.

Sin'Dall, a level 37 tiger, prowls the hilltop southwest of the camp. The Shadowmaw Panthers (37–38) stalk the jungle east of the Mosh'Ogg hills.

Map of Stranglethorn Vale with the stops of part 2 numbered
  • 1Barnil Stonepot 35.7, 10.5: Welcome to the Jungle, which goes to Hemet Nesingwary 35.7, 10.8; Barnil later gives the Green Hills chapters.

  • 3Hemet Nesingwary 35.7, 10.8: Raptor Mastery, ten Stranglethorn Raptors 27.8, 14.3 and later ten Lashtail Raptors 32.0, 20.7.
  • 4The elder tigers 31.3, 16.6: ten Elder Stranglethorn Tigers (34–35), and then Sin'Dall on the hilltop 31.5, 15.5 for his paw.
  • 5The Shadowmaw jungle 48.1, 20.2: ten Shadowmaw Panthers (37–38) for the last Panther Mastery.

3The Bloodscalp CoastLevel 30–37

The Bloodscalp trolls hold the ruins on the coast west of Nesingwary's camp and the village beyond it; every Bloodscalp can drop a tusk or an ear. The Bloodscalp Headhunters (36–37) in the village on the coast carry the shrunken heads, and the Vile Reef lies under the water off the coast northwest of Grom'gol.

A Pendant of Myzrael is a very rare drop from the Bloodscalps; if one drops, read it.

Map of Stranglethorn Vale with the stops of part 3 numbered
  • 1The Bloodscalp ruins 26.3, 13.4: nine Bloodscalp Tusks for Hunt for Yenniku.
  • 2The village on the coast 24.7, 10.5: twenty Shrunken Heads from the Headhunters for Headhunting.
  • 3The ruins up the coast north of the reef 28.8, 19.9: twenty-five Bloody Bone Necklaces for Kin'weelay.
  • 4The Vile Reef 24.8, 22.9: the Tablet Shard rests on the sea floor by the sunken ruins; watch your breath and the murlocs.
  • 5Bloodscalp Ears 29.8, 21.6: fifteen ears for Kebok's Bloodscalp Ears in Booty Bay.

4The Mosh'Ogg Hills and the Jungle South of Grom'golLevel 33–41

The Lashtail Raptors (35–36) hunt the jungle just northeast of Grom'gol, and the Mosh'Ogg ogres camp in the hills just east of it; kill one Brute and one Witch Doctor (36–37), one at a time. East of the ogres the Shadowmaw Panthers (37–38) stalk unseen, and the Stranglethorn Tigresses on the same ground now and then drop a pristine fang.

The Jungle Stalkers (40–41) hunt the coast south of Grom'gol. They are well above you at first: pull one at a time and rest between fights. Elder Mistvale Gorillas (40–41) live in Mistvale Valley east of the road to Booty Bay; about one in twenty carries an aged sinew.

Map of Stranglethorn Vale with the stops of part 4 numbered
  • 1The Lashtail Raptors northeast of Grom'gol 32.4, 24.6: fifteen Lashtail Raptors for The Defense of Grom'gol.
  • 2The Mosh'Ogg camp 35.5, 30.9: one Brute and one Witch Doctor (36–37) 36.1, 31.7.
  • 3The Shadowmaw jungle 36.0, 34.0: eight Shadowmaw Claws and a Pristine Tigress Fang for Mok'thardin's Enchantment.
  • 4The coast south of Grom'gol 33.0, 36.5: ten Jungle Stalkers (40–41) for Raptor Mastery, whose feathers go to Mok'thardin.
  • 5Mistvale Valley 32.4, 58.0: the Aged Gorilla Sinew for the third Mok'thardin's Enchantment.

5Booty Bay: Bloodsail and the Gorilla RitualLevel 30–46

Follow the road south to Booty Bay at the southern tip of the vale and enter through the tunnel in the cliffs. Gringer, the Horde flight master, waits on the upper deck. The quest-givers stand on the boardwalks around the harbour and in the inn.

The three Bloodsail ships lie off the Wild Shore; the crews are 42 to 45, with Stillwater (45), Keelhaul (46) and Fleet Master Firallon (48): at 41 this is a fight for a group or for the end of the guide. Hand the gorilla fangs to Witch Doctor Unbagwa and stay by him: he calls three waves of gorillas, then Mokk. Fight them one at a time.

6Zanzil's Camps, the Mine and the Skullsplitter RuinsLevel 30–46

North of Booty Bay, three ghostly pirates haunt the jungle near Zanzil's camps: Maury and Jon-Jon stand together, Chucky further east. Zanzil's followers camp northeast of Mistvale, and every one can carry the mixture. The Venture Co. goblins dig at the mine east of the road; miners, foremen, surveyors and tinkerers all drop the crystals.

The Skullsplitter ruins lie east of the mine: pull the headhunters and berserkers one at a time. Ana'thek the Cruel guards the southwest ruins, and the trophy skulls are in three ruins, Zul'Mamwe, Balia'mah and Ziata'jai. Further west, the Bloodscalp chiefs Gan'zulah and Nezzliok stand together in the ruins of Zul'Kunda: clear their guards first, then pull them.

7Later Visits and Moving OnLevel 45–50

The last visits are hand-ins: The Fate of Yenniku and the three pulsing shards for The Singing Crystals at Kin'weelay, and the OOX escort hand-ins at Oglethorpe Obnoticus in Booty Bay. Nimboya's Trollbane sends you to Zengu at Hammerfall in Arathi Highlands, and Krazek's and MacKinley's long-distance errands lead to Gadgetzan and Steamwheedle Port in Tanaris.
