About Burning Steppes
The Burning Steppes are what remains when a mountain breathes. Ragnaros’s home in Blackrock Mountain has kept the plains in ash for generations, and the Blackrock clan, one of the oldest orc clans, made the mountain the Horde’s first fortress in Azeroth. Orgrim Doomhammer gathered his warriors in Blackrock Spire when the Alliance pressed the Horde back.
After the Horde’s defeat the mountain did not go quiet. Dal’rend Blackhand, the old warchief’s son, gathered a Horde of his own in the Spire and allied with the black dragon Nefarian, who watches the steppes from Blackwing Lair. The Alliance’s Morgan’s Vigil and the Horde’s Flame Crest keep watch at opposite ends of a plain where nothing grows.
Morgan’s Vigil and Flame Crest give each faction a place to stand on the smoking plain. On the western edge, Blackrock Mountain is one of the most important destinations in Azeroth, with Blackrock Spire, Molten Core, and Blackwing Lair all inside.

Burning Steppes Leveling Guide for the Alliance, Levels 48–56
The Burning Steppes is the ash-grey highland at the foot of Blackrock Mountain. The Alliance enters from Lakeshire and arrives at Morgan's Vigil in the south-east, where Oralius hands out the zone's long list of kill and collect quests. The second hub, the goblin camp at Flame Crest, sits north-west on the road to the mountain.
Monsters run from level 50 Firegut ogres on Dreadmaul Rock to level 54 to 55 Blackrock worgs and the orcs at the foot of the mountain, with the level 54 Gor'tesh at the Blackrock Stronghold. Almost every quest item is a quest-only drop, so there is nothing to buy at the auction house first.
1Morgan's Vigil: Take Oralius's QuestsLevel 48–56
Ride north out of Lakeshire through the pass; the Vigil sits at the top, in the south-east of the Steppes. Take the flight path, then pick up everything Oralius gives you: the Firegut ogres on Dreadmaul Rock, the head of Gor'tesh, the fifty Blackrock medallions and the head on a stick all start here.

2Dreadmaul RockLevel 50–54
The Firegut ogres hold the great rock north of the Vigil, with the Brutes on its east side. Kill 15 Firegut Ogres (50 to 51), plus the Mages (51 to 52) and Brutes (52 to 53) the quest names. Once Gor'tesh's head is in your bag, come back up to the top of the rock and plant it in the soft dirt mound for Ogre Head On A Stick = Party.

3Flame Crest and the Ruins of ThaurissanLevel 50–54
Follow the road west, then climb north to the goblin camp on Flame Crest. Tinkee Steamboil and Maxwort Uberglint give the quests here. The relics for The Smoldering Ruins of Thaurissan are the carved stones scattered through the Ruins of Thaurissan around Flame Crest: click them until the information is recovered. Read the tablet in the Dark Iron camp among the ruins to copy the transcript, and use the Draco-Incarcinatrix 900 on a Black Broodling just before it dies for each essence.

4Blackrock StrongholdLevel 50–56
Gor'tesh and the Blackrock orcs hold the camps and the stronghold at the foot of Blackrock Mountain, west of Flame Crest. Pull them one at a time. Every orc and worg may drop a medallion, so kill them until you have fifty; Gor'tesh himself is level 54.
Franclorn Forgewright's ghost stands on his tomb on the great chain inside Blackrock Mountain, and only the dead can see him. If you die near the mountain anyway, run your spirit to him before resurrecting to take Dark Iron Legacy.

Burning Steppes Leveling Guide for the Horde, Levels 48–54

Thal'trak Proudtusk in Kargath sends you to the Burning Steppes to find out what became of Sha'ni. She is on Dreadmaul Rock: hand in Dreadmaul Rock there and take Krom'Grul, which asks for Sha'ni's Nose-Ring.
The Rise of the Machines, from the Hierophant in Kargath, needs 10 Fractured Elemental Shards from the south-east of the zone.
