About Alterac Mountains
Alterac is the kingdom that did not survive its own choices. Its people were General Ignaeus’s northlanders, the roughest of the human tribes; Alterac Fortress held the great human host that fought the Amani, and its lords stood beside Thoradin at the founding of Arathor. In the Second War, King Perenolde chose to bargain rather than fight, and let the Horde march through his passes to strike at Lordaeron.
The Alliance never forgave him. The kingdom was broken up and its lords scattered; the Syndicate that remains to this day is a band of exiled nobles and rogues. The Frostwolf clan had already made a home in these mountains, where Durotan’s son Thrall was born. A land that made both a traitor and a legend is still a place people look at twice.
Today the broken kingdom belongs to the Syndicate and the Crushridge ogres, while Dalaran, the Kirin Tor’s city of magi, has risen again on its original ground. Follow the high passes south and you reach Alterac Valley, the long-running Alliance versus Horde battleground.

Alterac Mountains Leveling Guide for the Alliance, Levels 30–40
The Alterac Mountains are the cold, ruined highlands north of Hillsbrad Foothills, and the Alliance has no quest hub here: the quests are picked up in Hillsbrad and Southshore, and this zone is where their targets are. The work is a short loop around the ruined kingdom: the mountain lions in the south, the Crushridge ogres and Baron Vardus in the east, the Dark Council in the north, and the old city of Dalaran in the west.
Monsters run from level 32 to 34 mountain lions and Crushridge ogres to level 40 Baron Vardus and Nagaz. Every quest item is a quest-only drop, so there is nothing to buy at the auction house first.
1The Southern Hills and the Ruins of AlteracLevel 30–36
Costly Menace from Southshore asks for eight Mountain Lions (32 to 33) and ten Hulking Mountain Lions (33 to 34), who share the southern hills. The Alterac Signet Rings for Maleb's Noble Deaths are collected in the ruins. Preserving Knowledge is completed at the Ruins of Alterac.

- 1Southern hills 43.2, 76.3: 8 Mountain Lions and 10 Hulking Mountain Lions 44.2, 76.7 for Costly Menace.
- 2Ruins of Alterac 58.1, 67.3: 7 Alterac Signet Rings for Noble Deaths.
2Crushridge, Baron Vardus and the Dark CouncilLevel 30–40
The Crushridge ogres are level 34 to 35, and nine of them drop the Dirty Knucklebones for Marshal Redpath's Crushridge Bounty. Baron Vardus (40) carries the head for Maleb's Baron's Demise. In the north, Nagaz (40) leads the Dark Council; the Argus Shadow Mages (35 to 36) stand around him. Pull them one at a time.

- 1Crushridge ogres 55.5, 40.6: 9 Dirty Knucklebones.
- 2Baron Vardus 60.3, 43.1: the Head of Baron Vardus.

- Archmage Ansirem Runeweaver 18.8, 78.5: Magical Analysis and Ansirem's Key.
